Silvio Volpi 1901-1956

Post by jwazevedo »

I’m looking for some help in tracing the parents of a relation, Silvio Volpi, who was born in New York in 1901 and died in California in 1956.

Here’s what I know so far:

From Silvio’s California Death Index:
Name: Silvio V. Volpi
Birth Date: 3 Nov 1901
Birthplace: New York
Death Date: 25 Feb 1956
Death Place: San Francisco
Mother's Maiden Name: Mostechelli

From the 1920 Census for Berkeley, California:
Mother: Giovanina Volpi, age 49, widowed, born in Italy to parents born in Italy
Son: Silvio Volpi, age 18, born in New York to parents born in Italy

I’ve found the immigration record for Silvio’s mother:
Ship: Aller
Departing: Genoa
Arriving New York: Jun 28, 1899
Line: 0007
Passenger: Mostachetti, Giovanina
Gender: F
Age: 28y
Married: S
Ethnicity: Italian
Place of Residence: Cajolo, Italy
Final destination: Le Roy, New York
To join: Interested Husband (? Illegible annotation)
Notation: “Dix 508â€

Dear Suanj,
Yes, I think you are right about Giovanni/Giovanna. I do not have Ancestry and cannot see the census image, but your text extract for the 1910 census in Solano is compelling. Solano is not far from Berkeley, where Giovanina ended up after the death of her husband. And since Silvio eventually named his child John, it makes sense that Silvio's father was Giovanni. And Bernardo could well have been a brother/uncle/cousin of Giovanni.

So we see Giovanni must have arrived before 1899 but missed the 1900 census, settled briefly in LeRoy, where two children were born, and then moved to California. Giovanni must have died there before 1920, and then Giovanna and her son Silvio are on their own. (Silvio later married Mary Oberto and settled in Sonoma County, California, where they both lived until their death.)

Thank you so much for your help.
