Searching for FEMINELLA origins

Post by Jim2814 »

I am searching for any known relatives of my great grand father, Domenico Feminella. I know that he came to the US in 1885 and I have all census data here. However, I am trying to find out where he came from in Italy. I suspect he came from SOSSANO, because almost all of the Feminellas I found came from that town.

I have not been able to find any passenger ship records. At that time he must have come through Castle Garden because Ellis Island had not opened yet.

If anyone has any information about Feminella's in Italy I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

The name Feminella is very rare. It exists in only 3 places in Italy today.
Here are a list with phone numbers.

I checked Castle Garden but did not find a Domenico. Where did he settle?
About how old was he? Name of spouse?

Misbris,

Thanks for your note. He came here when he was about 17, in 1883, and settled in Elizabeth, NJ. He married Rosa at some time when she was 15. I have the 1900-1930 census with all that info. I found a posible manifest from Castle Garden in 1884.

I am trying to find where he originated from. I need to find a document that indicates his home town in Italy.

Thanks,
Jim

Since the name is so rare, I would take a chance and write to Sassano. The only other place where there seems to be a presence of Feminella is
Sambuca di Sicilia in Sicily.

If you look at this site, you can see how rare the name is.

Domenico Feminella is also my great grandfather. I grew up in the house on 4th avenue in Elizabeth NJ he used to own.

Hi, I know that Domenico Feminella and Rose Cammarano settled in Elizabeth, NJ, but maybe in the first time they arrived in NY, because I found this marriage record:
Fiminella Domenico Nov 23 1890 13077 (1890) Manhattan

Cammarano Rosa Nov 13 1890 13077 (1890) Manhattan
the day is a bit different for transcription error, but I have no doubts that is the marriage of your ancestors...
maybe by this way you can know the birthplace?
however sure both coming from Salerno area, it is just my idea ....
hoping helpful,

Suanj,

Thank you for the info. Those are my great grand parents. The wedding year is consistent with the 1910 census. How can I view the information online?

Thanks again,
Jim

Hey Jim,
Try spelling with 2 mm, Femminella, it worked for me. He was most likely from the Sassano, Sala Consilina, Padula area. If I can help you, e-mail me at jfemine@yahoo.com
