Martello/Agresti

Post by oilman19 »

The problem with getting hooked on genealogy (as I have) is I tend to eventually bring up the subject with friends. I did that recently and was going to show the friend how I could get her started on the path to the past. I completely struck out using the typical search engines to find a link (I don't have Ancestry). I used the info she provided from memory.
It is as follows:
Her father was Ralph Martello, born in Italy (Sicily) abt 1916 of Antonio Martello & Elfimia (sp) ???.
Her mother Teresa Agresti, born abt 1914 in Pennsylvania of Giuseppe Agresti and Margaret ??? from Naples area.
I know this isn't much, but I could be a hero if someone could get me started in the right direction.

Thank you,

Jim

Is this your Ralph Martello from the Social Security Death Index?

Name: Ralph Martello
SSN: 055-14-7017
Last Residence: 11709 Bayville, Nassau, New York, United States of America
Born: 11 Feb 1916
Died: 31 Jan 1988
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)

You can request the Social Security Application (for a small fee) and it will tell the town of birth, and the names of his parents.

Wow! I believe you found him. That was fast.
Any clue on his birth location?
It is her grandson who has started the family tree and I would like to give him an incentive to continue.

Thank you T.

Here is an example of why you can't depend on information in things like the Census. This is the 1930 for Giuseppe Agresti and family living in New York. Spelling of wife and children's names is typical of misunderstanding pronunciation, and the use of nicknames (?). In addition, the children are listed as born in New York, and we know they were born in Pennsylvania (maybe the two youngest were born in New York) We can probably accept this as the right family because the twins Louisa and Concetta are listed here.
Lizzie = Teresina
Austina = Agostino
James = Gennaro

The saints must be smiling down on that grandson!!!! :-)

Found the Naturalization Petition for Eufemia Martello (Ralph's mother) and it is a wealth of information...

Eufemia Martello
Living @ 1908 3rd Ave, New York
Born in St. Efemia, Italy on March 6, 1888
Husband - Antonio

Married on August 20, 1914 in Gioia, Italy
Antonio was born at Seminara, Italy on August 12, 1882 and entered the USA at NY on January 14, 1915

They have a son Raffaele - February 11, 1916, born and resides in NY So Ralph was born in USA, not Italy.

Eufemia came to USA on SS. Guglielmo from Palermo, arriving NY on April 28, 1915 under the name Eufemia Martello. Last residence was Gioia Tauro, Italy.

So Ralph was born in New York, and parents were not born in Sicily, but in the Calabria Region, just across the Strait of Messina, in Reggio Calabria.

Link for Gioia Tauro, also in Province of Reggio Calabria.
