Altobello family

Post by johnalto »

I'm looking for any kind of info on the Altobello's in the Monopoly, Bari region. My grandfather and grandmother came to the US 1907 and died in 1918 Of the 1918 world flu. He was 24 when he arrived. I have the passenger record but not much else to go on. My father was a baby when his father passed. He and his brother and two sisters were put in orphanages.

thanks, John

Welcome to the forum, John! :-)

Where were they living in the US?

Your grandfather's first name? Grandmother's maiden name?

For reference: Is this the manifest from 1907?

Looks like he is traveling with his brother Antonio, 17.

If you know your grandfather's date of birth, you can write directly to the comune of Monopoli to request his birth record. (and the marriage record if he was married there). It is best to write the letter in Italian. Here is a link for form letter in Italian if you need one...

Address:

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Piazza Garibaldi, 6
70043 Monopoli (BA)
ITALY

Great information John :-)

So the above manifest is your grandfather Vito, and his brother Antonio.

It reads (line 3 and 4): click on document to enlarge.

SS Luisiana arriving NY in November of 1907
Vito is 24 (so birthdate would be about 1883 or 84), single, farm laborer, from Monopli, Bari, leaving in Monopoli his father Giacomo. Heading to Clarksburg, West Virginia to cousin Giovanni Biasi @ 335 W. Pike St.

Could you tell me where they lived?

Where did Vito and Anna get married?

Some ship manifests for Orazio Di Martino from Rosolini, Italy.

SS. Algeria arriving NY from Naples on 4 February 1907
Orazio DiMartino, 28, married, shoemaker, from Rosolini, going to friend Luigi Lupica in NY. (This Orazio's birth would be about 1879)

SS. San Giorgio arriving NY March 30, 1909.
Orazio DiMartino, 30, married, laborer, from Rosolini, leaving wife Angela Catantella in Rosolini, going to cousin Salvatore Maetehe (sp?) in Middletown, Conn. Notation says this person also came to US in 1907 and 1908.

They ended up in Beryl, WV. I think they might have been married in Piedmont or Keyser, WV. Alot of records were lost in a fire in Piedmont which is the town right next to Beryl.

Great site wldspirit :D
There's a new link on the FamilySearch Pilot for the WV records. The results sends you to the archives for an image of the document. It may help when the WV archives search slows down. The FamilySearch Pilot also has a neat advanced search where you can look by parent's name.
