Francesco D'Andrea b:25 May1894 Celico,Cosenza,Calabria

Post by lizfausto »

I'm looking for my grandfathers family, he was born 25 May 1894,in Celico,Cosenza,Calabria,Italy. He went to the USA when he was 14,and went back to serve in the war in Italy. He came back here and lived in Webster,Massachusetts and was a police officer, he married Elizabeth L. Bastolla in Massachusetts. I have a photo of him at age 14 taken in Italy, he is with "Sam" D'Andrea, whom I don't know. Please help!

This may be him with his name misspelled. The original manifest is missing on www.ellisislandrecords.org, but may be located on www.stevemorse.org using the missing manifest option and the date on this passenger card.

First Name: Francesco

Last Place of Residence: Celico, Cosenza
Date of Arrival: Aug 11, 1910
Age at Arrival: 16 Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Konigin Luise

Manifest Line Number: 0027

with him on the manifest-

0026. D'Omdree, Salvatore M 31 M Italian, South Celico, Cosenza
0027. D'Omdree, Francesco M 16 S Italian, South Celico, Cosenza

By the way, Sam is probably the Salvatore who was on the passenger list with him. It is common for Salvatores in the U.S. to go under the name of Sam.

Francesco was Salvatore's brother. On the www.stevemorse.org website, you can view the passenger list. Type in Aug 10 1910, T715, roll 1531, frames 551 and 550. Looks like they went to Wyoming-city of Hanna -address is given as Box 179. Last name is spelled as D'Andrea on the original manifest. Salvatore was a porter. Carmela is Sal's wife and the other two are his children.

I see the family on the 1900 census for Mt Vernon NY. On this census, Francesco is listed as Sal's son and not his brother. ED 89 sheet 12 B. Sal's year of birth is given as 1869, as is Carmela's. Frank son born in Dec 1894. Son Antonio born in Sept 1896, daughter Millie in May 1898, and Pippila, daughter born in Dec 1899. Family was living at 35 North Third Avenue.

I see Frank D'Andrea on a WWII draft registration card living at 353 Webster, Mass. Age 47 born in Cellico DOB May 25, 1894. On this card, he lists the person who will always know of his whereabouts as Mrs Mildred Leo, 340 High St, Webster Mass. He worked for the Webster Shoe Corp.

You can view the two pages of this card by going to www.familysearchlabs.org. You need to register with a username and password. Go down to where it says United States, World War II draft registration, 1942. The cards are in alphabetical order. He is the first one under D' and then D'Andrea, Frank.

By the way, I forgot to welcome you to this forum. There are so many people on this forum who will give you help. I don't have subscriptions to different genealogy websites such as ancestry.com. Someone else on this forum will therefore have to retrieve records for you from such website, if there are any.

Thanks VJ for getting those images for Liz. I was going to give her the archive of Cosenza website too, but the ones I saw from Celico with the surname were from the very early 1800s.

Anyway, I see an Elizabeth Bastolla on a 1920 census, age 17, enumerated with her parents Ralph and Mary Bastolla and her siblings. ED 177 sheet 3B living at 25 Pleasant Street. Webster Town, Worcester Mass. Possibly someone can upload an image of this census page for you.
