Saone, Italy

Post by joshseverse »

Hello,

I am trying to research my family name. Today it is Severse but I discovered it was also Saverse and Severe. I acquired naturalization records for my Great 3 Grandfather. It said he was born in Saony, Italy in 1854. Nothing comes up for Saony. I think it probably would be Saone. Is this a reasonable guess? Also his name was Antonio Saverse and also listed as Antony and Anthony. Thank you for your time.

There is a frazione (a neighborhood, small township) named Saone which is a part of Comune di Tione di Trento in the province of Trento, Northeastern Italy.

Seems like a good possibility...

for to find the right italian nametown of birth, need of to know the exact right spelling of surname... my idea is that Saverse is really Savarese and in this case Anthony coming from south Italy... for that it is necessary to have more infos, and to find all US data before of all...

Hello Suanj,
I have seen tha 1900 Census and I don't believe it is him for a couple of reasons. His wife Mary (Marie) was born in Keesville, NY and that would make her a citizen. Also, the children don't match.

How is the name spelled on your great-great-great-grandfather's naturalization documents?

Also, these documents in later years included information on how the applicant arrived in the US (date, name of ship or train, etc). Do you have that info?

I'm not completely sure that the record is his but I would bet it is. Here is what it says and I got it from the National Archives in Wash D.C.:

from 27 th day of October, 1884

respectfully represents Anthony Severe now a resident in Laconia, NH a free white person, an alien and subject of Napoleon King of Italy that he was obrn at Saony in Italy in the year of 1854 and is now thirty years of age. That he arrived at Brooklin (Not spelled Brooklyn, maybe Brooklin ME) in the U.S.A. in 1868 being then a minor under the age of 18 years, to wit between 17 & 18 years. That he arrived at the age of 21 years on the (Blank, nothing written) in 1875. That he resided in the US 3 years next preceding his arriving at the age of 21 years and has continued to reside herein to the present time, to wit in New York andin Laconia NH for the last 4 years.

There's more but that is the most important part. I think it is him because I have seen evidence of him marrying in Keeseville NY and then moving to Laconia NH. He also could have come to the west through Canada also. His death certificate has him as a Saverse but he hasd children named Severse and Severe.

That is great information!! Those birth records are definitely his children.

The 1st and 3rd I did not have. From the 1910 Census, it said that his wife Mary (Marie) had 11 children but only 6 were living.

If I give you info on some of the other children, do you think you could check the birth records from Laconia, NH? When I contacted NH state in Concord, they weren't much help.

If you are a member of ancestry.com, I can give you the link to my tree.

The WWII Reg card from Arthur Anthony is his son.

Thank you for everything. This has been great!!!

That is wild. On my drive home I was going to ask you to look into Raffaelo Scipione. It's like you read my mind.

Is there a record of Ralph's birth in Formia? Maybe his mother's maiden name is my correct surname!!
