Need some help

Post by strahbary »

Hi,

I am at a dead trying to trace my father's family. So far I have been able to find my Grandfather's name was Giuseppe (Joseph) Giovinazzo. He was born in 1885 is Serata, Calabria Italy and lived in Gerace, Calabria, Italy until he immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1912. At Some point while living in Italy he married a Rosa Nasso. Then died in Utica New York in 1940.

I can't find any birth records or other information on him. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

HI I am wondering if you ever got a copy of his death certificate? Just a thought bc there is usually some info like mother's maiden name and birth place! Then you can have more leads!

I presume you meant Serrata (two r's), correct?

Do you know for certain that this is Giuseppe's place of birth? If so, why not write the comune and request his birth certificate? If he married in Italy, the birth certificate should also contain notations concerning the date and place of marriage as well as his bride's full name.

The address to write to would be:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Serrata
Piazza F. D`Agostino
89020 Serrata RC
ITALY

You can try sending email to comunediserrata@virgilio.it (remove the spaces). The comune's website is at http://www.comune.serrata.rc.it/index.p ... =index&p=1

There are many threads here which discuss how to write to comuni for documents. One is at http://italiangenealogy.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15162/

Also, take a look at http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

How accurate is the rest of your information? I found a manifest for Giuseppe Giovinazzo, arriving at Ellis Island from Reggio Calabria on March 10, 1911, aged 23 (thus born approx 1888), single.

See line 7 on the manifests -

I found this arrival abt:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Rosaria Nasso
Name: Rosaria Nasso
Arrival Date: 27 Jun 1913
Birth Year: abt 1887
Birth Location: Catanzaro
Birth Location Other: curinga
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Prinzess Irene

- Rosaria Nasso in travel with Giuseppe Nasso, brother, coming from Nicastro, born in curinga, lefting Pasquale father in Nicastro, arrived in USA in 1913 and joining at Giovinazzo Raffaele husband(??) in 607 Catherine st,Utica, NY;
instead Giuseppe Nasso last residence Nicastro, born in Maida, joining at Giuseppe Giovinazzo brother in law in 677 Catherine st, Utica, NY

something not match... maybe a error abt first name of Rosaria husband... but in this case the arrival of Giuseppe Giovinazzo... left wife Maria...? a mystery..... you sure that your Giuseppe was born in Serrata???

From what I can tell the information was pretty accurate. Another family member who had access to more family information and paper documents had information that matched mine.
