Does anyone know a resource where I can find the heritage of various northern Italian surnames? :?:

This site ( http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/index.html ) can help; begin by clicking one of the letters of the alphabet at the top of the page.

Forum member PeterTimber is our resident expert on name origins. He has not been spending as much time here of late as in the past, however you can try PM'ing him: http://italiangenealogy.com/Your_Accoun ... 21767.html

If the surnames are from Trentino, you may find some info here -- www.trentinoheritage.com
Researching Iob (Job, Yob), Dalpiaz, Zanon in villages of Cunevo and Flavon (Trentino) and Romano in Spadafora (Sicily).

Good site Sal, but unfortunately the surname (Mainardis) does not exist anywhere.

How about Mainardi (which is certainly the more likely Italian spelling):

http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/ ... 011agn.htm
Google translates the above as:

"Widespread with average frequency in the north and sporadically in the center, behind the name of German origin and traditional Franconian Meinhard, documented in the same area as the tenth century or Maginardus Maghinardus and Mainardus. formed by "image" force, power (the transition from Magin to main what is all Lombard Franconian) and "hardu, hard, strong, brave, with its original meaning, so hard, fearful for his strength. The abbot of the Benedictine Jean Mabillon, Abbot of Reims and scholar tells us about the following notes relating to the existence of the surname Mainardi already in the fifth century .... a Count Meinhard of the fifth century, perhaps Meinhard / 7 Tomo , including 419 of the Acts of SS. Benedictines. And again Maginardi Mainard and fifth-century bishop of Le Mans and und'essi, p.. 282, 629, Volume 7 of the same documents. (Sources: Emidio de Felice and Acts of SS.Benedettini Jean de Mabillon)

As you can see with this mapping tool ( http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/genera.html ), Mainardi is very common in Italy today, especially in the north; Mainardis much less so.

You have to watch those prefixes, they often change/add/drop over the years.

http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/ ... 0004er.htm

http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/ ... 0004ip.htm

http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/cognomi0017.htm

PS: The Google Translator is imperfect but often better than nothing. http://translate.google.com/#

The birth certificate clearly shows "Mainardis" as the surname and has always been known as that. How can I attach a copy of the certificate?

I would suggest that it is still the same root name, possibly even an original spelling which was later "italianized" by dropping the final s.

You can post image files on this site directly if the file size is less than 256kb. Just open a reply, click the "browse" button alongside the Filename box then click the Add Attachment button.

For files larger than 256kb, you will need to use a third-party image hosting site such as photobucket.com, imageshack.com, or postimage.org. See this thread for a discussion of this subject: http://italiangenealogy.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=17142/

Using this site you can see the actual spread of the lastname Mainardis in Italy:

http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html

looks like a lastname from the Friuli region, in the north-east

Digit here your lastname to see in which towns it's today present mainly:

http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

I saw there are Mainardis in Udine town and province, you can check this helpful site too:

Hi Favret,

There seems to be a concentration of Mainardis still in the Udine region (Friuli-Venezia-Giulia), mostly in and around the comune of Amaro.

Hi guys, especially pink67 (Laura).

I just clicked on the link you gave for the Udine archives and managed to find about a dozen relatives, most unknown, over three generations from my wife's line.

She is thrilled.

Thank you so much all of you for your sharing community spirit.

Thank you obelix, I'm glad you found records for your wife's tree....
I'm hoping that also other towns and state archives offices will put on-line their genealogic heritage....

Ciao!
