Is there a town/city named Amurusso located in Italy?

Post by Nancee »

I found the name of a city, Amurusso--not sure if the spelling is correct. But, I cannot find it anywheres. It's where my mother's father was born. I am probably spelling it wrong?

Hello and welcome! :-)

Where did you find this town? If it was a written document, you can scan and post it here and we can take a look. If it was on a birth record, sometimes the script is hard to read, so we can help.

Meanwhile...
This site lists the franzioni (villages) and localities of Italy alphabetically.
See if anything looks similar to Amurusso...

A possibility would be Amorosi in the Province of Benevento, Campania Region.

Hi Nancee,

If you tell us the surname of your maternal grandfather, it might help to find the right place of his birth.

His name was Carlo Riccardi (I think this is is the spelling) but changed to "Richards" when he went to America. The only thing I have is my mother telling me years ago that he was born in Amurusso, but I don't recall if she spelled it for me or I took the liberty of doing it myself.
It has to be close cuz she had a great memory and I know she knew where he was born. The mom was Francesca Marabello, born in Raiano.

Thanks for your help. Geez, you guys are good at this stuff! I'm a novice and have no clue about any of it.

Nancee,

Do you have an approximate year of birth for Carlo?

Hi Nancee,

Tessa & Peter are correct. The comune of Raiano is near Caserta, and there is a comune or frazione in the same area called Amorosi, in the province of Benevento.

So that's the place to research.

Age 16, carpenter, leaving father Luigi in Amorosi, going to his Aunt Lucia Riccardi in Rochester, NY

My grandmother, Francesca Marabello, was born in 1888 so I imagine he was born close to that, maybe 1883-1888.
But, he was definitely a Carlo, I'm 90% sure, and I don't know what his line of work was or remember anyone talking about it.
But, I think Amorosi is a definite. Interesting that Raiano and Amorosi are close together--that would explain them meeting and marrying.

Do you know if Carlo and Francesca were married in Italy or US?

Where in US did they live?

Possible 1899 manifest ...Carlo Ricciardi, 21, single, from Amorosi... going to an uncle Antonio Materi in Glasgow, NY.

Anything sound familiar?

Wow. I know that the 3 boys-- William, Earl and Joseph--were born in East Kingston, NY cuz I wrote it down. I looked at the map and Glasco (I think Glascow is now Glasco) is maybe 15 miles north of East Kingston! That would have made him 10 years older than the wife, Francesca-1888. The 2 girls: Anna and Filamegna were born in Schnecteday, NY and my mother Antointette was born in Hudson, NY

That makes Francesca 11 years old in 1899. They didn't marry that early? God, I hope not! So, maybe they met and married here in America.
