Mansoni Family of Livorno, Tuscany

Post by anne70115 »

Am seeking information of the Mansoni Family of Livorno. Brothers Giovanni and Carlo left Livorno for the United States between 1803 and 1815. Giovanni became Consul to Tuscany for the mid Atlantic States and Carlo settled in New Orleans where he became Consul for Tuscany.

Their parents were Rocco Mansoni and Marie Cocchi of Livorno. Any information on how to find this family in Livorno would be most helpful.

Considering that the last name Mansoni today doesn't exist in Italy, I believe the correct spell was Mansani....

Anne,

this is a litte reference:

http://books.google.com/books?id=SAKWXf ... ns&f=false

looks like this book has the complete history of Giovanni Francesco Mansoni:

Thank you Laura for all the helpful information.

You are correct about Carlo Mansoni's brother dying at sea. I read the account in an historical newspaper.

I have sent for the Mobile, Alabama marriage license. Carlo was appointed consul to Tuscany for the Port of Mobile.

Carlo died in New Orleans in 1860 at the age of 60. His two sons fought in the Civil War and settled in Virginia. I don't know what happened to his daughter Odielle but his grand daughter Palmyre Robinson grew up in an orphanage. I suppose after Carlo died and her uncles went off to war, there was no place for Palmyre to go.

I have just found new information that Mansoni was responsible for bringing a very valuable collection of art to New Orleans in 1847 for the Grand Duke of Tuscany.

Can you tell me why you say the surname of Mansoni doesn't exist in Italy anymore? I've seen the name spelled several ways including Mansony.

Anne you might want to trace down the family thru google.com just put inthe title MANSONI SURNAME GENEALOGY LIVORNO ITALY and see where it takes you. Perhaps someone has already researched the genealogy of the family dating back to Livorno already saving you hours of research. =Peter=

I searched abt the Mansani and the Cocchi in Livorno area and Grosseto area... the Cocchi surname appearing in the towns of
Campiglia Marittima,
Macioli,
Massa Marittima,
Piombino,
Vaglia;
especially in Campiglia Marittima ( Livorno) and Massa Marittima (Grosseto);

I found only a:
-Maria Cocchi died in 1801 in Campiglia Marittima, Livorno( parish: S. Lorenzo)
I no found a Rocco Mansani record, however the surname appearing in Campiglia Marittima (Livorno), Massa Marittima (Grosseto), Piombino (Livorno), Riotorto (Livorno)....

Maybe Livorno town as birthplace ... meaning abt some Commune the Livorno province birthplace...?

Hi Anne, I wrote this because I generally use these two sites to know where a lastname is present today in Italy:

http://www.gens.labo.net/

http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

as I noticed that there was only one presence in the Sicily region I thought that maybe the spell of the lastname was incorrect...

However I think that the best thing for you to do is to contact the italian professor who wrote a book on your ancestor:

I believe that him will be happy to know a direct descendant :D and possible he has other helpful informations regarding Mansony's history....
