Mike and Margaret Mottola (both born 1875)of Avellino, Italy

Post by hinkles »

My wife is related to some Mottolas from Avellino in Italy. Their names are listed as Mike and Margaret Mottola (both born around 1875). They had a son, Joseph Jeremiah Mottola (Born October 8, 1896) who came with them from Italy. Mike came to the US in 1896 and Margaret came to the US with Joseph in 1902.

I am unable to locate anything about their arrival in the immigration records. Maybe their first names were "Americanized" and I am missing them? I'd also like to find the link to their ancestors in Italy. I would appreciate any help or information if this rings a bell with anyone. Thanks!

This might help as a reference to locate immigration records:

WWI Draft Reg Card for Joseph Mottola

Alternate surname spelling might be Mattola.
Possible place of birth Santa Lucia di Serino in province of Avellino.

You found the right Joseph Mottola. Thanks for the town name. Hopefully that will help too.

Wow! This is definitely the correct Michael's WWI Draft card. The addresses match Joseph's draft card above.

What's still confusing me is a 1910 US Census form (link below) that shows a "Mike and Margaret Mottola" (age 35) and son Joseph (age 14) living in Madison, NJ but all born in Italy. Could this be a different family in the same town?

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/9488 ... lausce.jpg

Also, Joseph's WWI draft cards say that both he and his father were born in Avellino, Italy but the WWII draft card says that he was born in Madison, NJ not Italy.

Joseph did had a daughter (who is my wife's grandmother) named Loretta which sounds like it could have been an Americanized version of the name Liberata on the draft card you found.

I can't seem to find the right Michael and Liberata Mottola in the immigration records, though.

Thanks so much for your help! You guys have already answered many questions faster than I ever could.

From Valarie's post, possible immigration record for Liberata Martone and son Generoso Mottola. Destination Paterson NJ to join husband/father Michele Mottola.

Couldn't have found it without your Liberata clue. Last residence looks like Serino to me.

I feel like I need to buy you both a beer! Paterson, NJ fits. I have record of the son Joseph Jeremiah Mottola marrying a girl named Lillian of Patterson, NJ. I found a 1930 Census (see links) with "Michal" and "Loretta" Mottola living in Madison, NJ which also fits.

I can't seem to find them in the 1910 or 1920 Census. I would guess they would be in Paterson, NJ in 1910 and Madison, NJ by 1920 (since the WWI Draft card indicates that). Maybe the names are spelled differently.

This Italian genealogy seems to be trickier than for my German and English ancestry. Again, I can't ever thank you enough for your help!

That address keeps popping up. It's the same address where Michael, Liberata, and Joseph Jeremiah (son) live according to Michael and Joseph's WWI draft cards. I wonder if it's an older brother of Michael's who immigrated before him? Would make sense that relatives would live in the same apartment building.

Still a mystery where Michael, Liberata, and Joseph are in 1910 and 1920.

Since it's the same address in 1918 and 1930, perhaps the census taker missed the family in 1920 - or their first names are really wrong.
Do you know the names of all of Michael and Liberata's children?
Thanks, Valarie

In the 1930 Census, I show Abe D. (14) and Ernest (20) living with them. Joseph Jeremiah would have moved out by then since he married Lillian in 1922.
