Grandfather's Birthplace

Post by nosobernate »

I am trying to determine my grandfather's birthplace. I have his Italian Military book and it indicates he was born in Bernate in 1863. I am not sure of which Bernate this could be; Casnate con Bernate (were once separate communities) or Bernate Ticino. My grandmother was born in Cuggiono, it is closer to Bernate Ticino. Their marriage was arranged so I am assuming Bernate Ticino. Am I making too much of an assumption? Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Forum :D !
Did your grandfather leave Italy? If he did perhaps his ship manifest has a location on it? Is there anything else you can tell us?
Thank you

If they married in Italy, their marriage record (act) should be at the bride's comune.
The record should have the groom's birth location
If you would like to write to Cuggiono for the record, this may help:

VJ,

My grandfather left Italy and I am pretty sure he arrived in New York, 11 Apr 1887. This info is from Ellis Island. The last name is spelt differently, Nozetti, but the other info fits. I will check the manifest.
---

My granmother arrived 4 years later and they married in Detroit. I am not sure what county or church.

Thank you for the form letter links.

Joe,
Thank you for the update.
If you haven't visited the FamilySearch pilot site yet, they may have some MI records that could help
Sometimes marriage records had a birth location other than 'Italy'
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsea ... html#start
If your grandfather naturalized (after 1906) his naturalization papers should have his birth location
http://www.germanroots.com/naturalization.html
Please let us know if you would like us to help you look for any of your family's US records

What else does the military record say?

I would expect to see some indication of the province of birth or the province from which the military record was obatined.

Military records are held at the province which includes the subject's place of birth. If the military record came from Provincia di Como, then Casnate Con Bernate is the place you may be looking for. If the records came from Provincia di Milano, then it would be Bernate Ticino.

There are also a few frazioni to take under consideration:

Frazione Bernate, Comune di Arcore, Provincia di Monza-Brianza, Regione di Lombardia, Northwestern Italy

Frazione Bernate, Comune di Casale Litta, Provincia di Varese, Regione di Lombardia, Northwestern Italy

Frazione Bernate Rosales, Comune di Casnate Con Bernate, Provincia di Como, Regione di Lombardia, Northwestern Italy

Frazione = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frazione

misbris,

I am pretty sure that the record you attached is my grandfather. I can find an A. Nosotti at CastleGarden.org (thank you for the site) but the year or birth is 1866 and he is listed as a musician. I do not recall my Dad or anyone else mentioning "musician". I found some other Nosotti's using the CastleGarden site, I'll follow up on those.

All,

A little more; talking with relatives my grandfather went to California and then Detroit. From Detroit he went to Windsor Ontario, Canada. This is where my Dad was born. My oldest Aunt was born in Detroit. I have a Canadian Citizenship document for my grandfather. The year is illegible. I don't know if he became an American citizen.

Found this:

Nosotti 15.24 Bernate Ticino Milano

Means 15 people with the name Nosotti in Bernate Ticino.

Perhaps the Italian cursive S was misinterpreted as a Z on American records.

VJ,

Yes these records belong to my family. My father and Aunts. My oldest Aunt, Frances, was born in Detroit. I am a member of ancestry.ca. I have seen these records.

I read the military record some more and the district is Abbiategrasso. This is close to Bernate Ticino. I also checked the citizenship record again and realized the date wasn't illigeble but is 19 Hundred. So he became a Canadian citizen in 1900.
