Post by gajack10 »

Am seeking info Re: James Bozza DOB 27 Mar 1827 in Italy (Austria). Immigrated to US approx 1844-46 to Hannibal, MO. Married Elizabeth Alred (Allred) DOB 30 Apr, 1831 in TN. First born James T. Bozza approx 1855. James & family moved to Alton, IL approx. 1855 and to TN approx 1878. Lived in TN til late in the century and then moved to San Diego CA. Died in CA 1903 and was transp back to TN for burial.
Applied for Naturalization papers (have a copy) disavowed allegiance to Austria, applied for travel papers (have a copy) and returned to Italy several times.
Would like early life info; place of birth, port of entry US, port of debar Italy, etc. Any other Italian data would be greatly appreciated.

Place of birth Austria.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. How can I determine the family in Italy?
James Bozza Sr was the Italian born in Italy in 1827; James T.Bozza was the first born son born in US in 1851 and died in Alton, IL in 1940.
I am trying to bridge the US Bozza family back to Italy and also trying to determine exactly when he immigrated, thru what port, on what ship, etc.
I believe (family runor) that James Sr also returned to Italy on than one occasion.
He may have came to the US initially indentured to someone in the grocery/dry goods business as he spent his career in that field.
Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Still looking for that manifest (or any manifest).

From the 1870 Census linked below, James Jr was born in Missouri. Maybe you could get a birth record from Missouri and it will give more details of James Sr. (possibly first name Vincenzo? - many with this first name took James as an American version).

A most hearty thanks to those of you who have posted and furthered my quest for the Bozza family history. I believe the ship registry info is from one of his later trips back to Italy.
Thanks again.

Hi. I am a descendant of that family. I have a lot of research about the father and children and some on the mother. I am researching more for a historical fiction children's story I'm writing. Just returned from a very fruitful search-trip in alton, Il. He did indeed return to Italy several times and is credited with bringing back some special trees that he planted in Alton area. Ran a grocery store. Son took it over. Family lived in Missouri (Hannibal. I think), Alton, and Nashville, Tenn. area. The area of Alton where they lived was called Bozzatown. There's still a Bozza street there. I recently found a fire insurance document with the location of the store and house. He apparently had a great deal to do with getting people to settle in that part of town. Had 14 children -- a couple died very young, but most lived a long time. My mother is the great granddaughter of James Bozza Sr. I am the great-great granddaughter. Luckily my family has a lot of documents, but still, when I write about the area and what it would have been like during his lifetime, I find I don't have nearly enough information. I would love to find out more -- especially about wife Elizabeth Allred (of Tennessee, I think). would love to see some of the ship registry, also naturalization papers. I have a few census documents I found in Alton. Maybe even more. I'd love to see any pictures of him, wife and family, and houses they owned here and there. Also would be great if I could find a picture of their general/grocery store and house in Alton.
