Rubinos from San Fele Basilicata Potenza IT

Post by bakedbeanie »

My grandfather was Vito Rubino, b ~1875 in San Fele. I believe that he emmigrated from San Fele in 1891 aboard the SS Anglia. I would love to find some birth/christening/marriage records for him and/or his parents,-Pietro and Maria Cristiano.

I would appreciate whatever guidance you might give me.

Do you have an Ancestry . com account? You may want to check out this online family tree. It gives Vito's date of birth as March 9, 1874 and death September 5, 1927.

I presume you are certain about San Fele?

A (admittedly, quick) search of passenger manifests turns up a Vito Rubino, age 30, born in Fasano, arrived in New York on May 4, 1907.

Fasano and San Fele are nearly 150 miles apart... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source= ... F8&t=h&z=9

With a paid subscription to ancestry.com, there are some San Fele records available online, but currently there only appear to be death indices and death records for specified years. Go to the following link, to see which records currently are available at this website:

microfilmed records for rental through a local family history center are only available for the years 1810-1860. To search for the center nearest you, and for information on how to rent microfilm, you can refer to the following link:

on www.castlegarden.org, there is a 15 year old Vito Rubino who arrived from San Fele who could possibly be your ancestor, but there is no way of knowing for certain.

RUBINO VITO age 15 arrival 8 Jul 1891 from SAN-FELE aboard the ship, CHANDERNAGOR. His destination was NY.

Ufficio Anagrafe
Comune di San Fele
Via Mazzini, 7
85020 San Fele (PZ)
Italia

you can write to the above address to see if you can get a copy of your ancestor's birth record since you have his parents' names and an approximate year of birth.

To help you write in Italian, you can refer to one of the following websites:

I am overwhelmed and very grateful to all who have responded to my inquiry. I do subscribe to ancestry.com and have basically put together all of my information from that site and the castlegarden.org site, as well as from stories and recollections of family members. The google maps application is wonderful.

Maestra36, I will try to write a letter requesting any records still available in SanFele. That should be interesting, in that my Italian [much to my shame] is shamefully lacking.

Many, many thanks to all of you.

You will hopefully be successful in writing to the town, especially because you have an estimated year of birth. I was actually looking for an email address you might use on the town's website, but I am not sure there is one there that will work for you.

This is the town's website:

http://www.comune.sanfele.pz.it/index.p ... ne&meid=34

If the link doesn't work, type in Comune di San Fele in the google search engine, and the website should come up. There is an email address there which may or may not work, but you might want to try that first before sending a letter.

comune.sanfele@cert.ruparbasilicata.it (no spaces)

When writing to the town via regular mail, you should include a self-addressed, but NOT stamped, envelope. Do not send any money. Most towns send record copies for free, although supposedly some are starting to charge for them.

Thank you, Peg. I'll follow that link. I have contacted a family member who, I believe, is fluent in Italian. Perhaps, she will write the letters for our family.

Thank you, again, for all your help.
