Coelli in Lombardia

Post by jcoelli »

I am looking for a genealogist to help me find the birth records of my ancestor born approximately 1848 in the region of Lombardia. I have his death certificate, with his parents' names and the town name is written unclearly and I cannot decipher the town name or the maiden name of his mother.

Could you please contact me if you believe you are able to help.

Thank you x

Hello and welcome to the forum-
If you could upload to the forum a copy of the death certificate you have, using a program like imageshack.com or photobucket.com, I'm sure someone on the forum will be able to help you decipher the town name and maiden name of the mother.

if you click on each letter of the alphabet where it says contents, you will get a list of the towns in the Lombardia region of Italy.

I found a town called Turbigo which is in the Province of Milan in the Lombardia region. I really can't say for sure that this is the correct town. I am still searching through the list, but maybe it is a possibility. Someone else on the forum may have another idea. I have considered G, L, and T as the beginning letter of the town's name.

Other links which might help you with town names or names of frazioni or hamlets are below:

http://www.italyworldclub.com/8000_italian_communes/

http://www.italyworldclub.com/italian_frazioni/

http://www.italyworldclub.com/lombardia/

I don't see a maiden name for Antonia in the section you uploaded. I think that what is written below her name is the town official's name.

The second, third, and fourth letters of the town name do look like "ebe," but there doesn't seem to be any town in the Lombardia region with those letters. It would be better if you could upload a copy of the entire certificate, so that those of us here on the forum could compare and better decipher the handwriting.

maybe the name town is no complete... however many Coelli coming from Torre de' Busi in Lecco province, Lombardia region...
I found a probable record of immigration by ancestry.com:

Victoria, Australia, Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists, 1839–1923 about Giacomo Ceilli
Name: Giacomo Ceilli
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Age: 19
Arrival Date: 10 Jul 1865
Arrival Port: Melbourne, Australia
Departure Port: Liverpool
Ship: Feronia
Nationality: Other Parts

but for bad luck, the manifest of Feronia ship arrived in july 1865 it are not in this helpful website
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/search.htm
because if was possible to find the image of arrival, maybe the birth town is listed more readable...
however it is impossible to say what is the birthtown, because by reading seeming Lebezo and lebezo not exist....

Hello Suanj,
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I really appreciate your help.

My ancestor's name was 'Pietro Giacomo Coelli' and I found a record of Peter Coelli or Pierre Coelli departing Liverpool in 1861 on a clipper ship called 'Chariot of Fame'. The age or Peter is incorrect but the Pierre's age was closer, I believe. I assumed that they may have mistaken his name when writing down. Pierre/Pietro... Easy mistake perhaps?

Have you come across this record also? Perhaps there is a town reference on 'Chariot of Fame' lists?

It has also been mentioned by family members that the town where my ancestor was from no longer exists. But there is also the possibility that as this town name was probably written down by an Australian, they may have made some serious errors with the spelling. But I guess this also makes my quest very difficult.

you considered that the right surname spelling could be Caelli and no Coelli; both the versions are in Lombardia region; some Caelli in Australia coming from " near Milan" and another coming from Teglio( Sondrio province, Lombardia region) for some other is mentioned only "Lombardia"....

My mother's maiden name is Coelli and the spelling has never been disputed. It is written throughout his death certificate and also remained as Coelli through 4 generations.

There is a record somewhere for Pierre Coelli (which has a more correct age).

Peg, I have thought that the first letter of the town name could be an 'F'. Do you think that could be correct?

Again, Thank you so much for your help. I have been at a stand still for over 4 months.

Jen.

Here is a full scan of the certificate, perhaps this can shed some more light on the mystery.

Even if the first letter of the town was the letter F, there is still no town name or hamlet name that starts Febe. Did you look at the links I sent you above with the list of town names and hamlet names? We can't find anything even remotely close in spelling to what is on this death certificate. This is a common problem even with U.S. records. Sometimes the spelling of the Italian town names is so different from what it should be that we just can't figure out the town based on what we see in a record. When I suggested the town that I did above, I was thinking that what was written on the death certificate might have been based on what an informant on the death certificate thought the correct Italian pronunciation of the town name was. Those of us on the forum who decipher handwriting and do translation work are really at a loss on this one. We need to somehow locate some other record which might have the town name on it. That's what suanj was trying to do when she located the passenger lists and naturalization records. I'll try to study the new images you posted later.

Maybe a stretch... :-)

but there is a frazione in Lombardy, province of Bergamo, called Filago
Maybe the person recording it just misunderstood?

Considering Australian accents, Filago could be a good possibility. How do I go about checking if they have my ancestor's records?

I would strongly suggest you try emailing first to determine if they have records for your ancestors. The frazione which T suggested is just that, a suggestion. It may not be the right place.

Jen,

Another option...

There are 3 listings for Coelli in the area around Filago...

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... ilago&ind=

You may wish to contact one or more to inquire about relatives/ancestors.
