Pagliari family from Accumoli

Post by wvscorchy »

I recently discovered that my grandmother's Italian name was Pagliari...her father was Giovanni Pagliari from Accumoli, Italy He traveled to US in JUN1901 at age 22. He sailed on ship, Calabria, from Naples and was going to NY to be with cousin G. D'Antonio (?sp) living at 60 Mulberry Street. The surname, Pagliari, was changed to Pegley in the US. Family is still in northern WV area. Is there any other info about this family from Accumoli? More info about Giovanni?

Hi and welcome!!! :-)

After joining his cousin in NYC, did Giovanni go immediately to WV? Or did he settle somewhere else?

Do you know the name of his wife? And could you furnish your grandmother's first name and DOB to help in our search?

POSSIBLE
WWI registration card for Giovanni...
Living in Preston County, WV (about 1917)
DOB - Jan. 25, 1879
Working as a miner...

The person listed above Giovanni is also going to the same cousin (D'Antonio) at 60 Mulberry St.

WWII Registration Card for John Pegley... :-)

Living in Preston County WV...
DOB - Jan. 25, 1879 (looks like a confirmation of the WWI "Giovanni Pagliari" card with exact date of birth and county of residence)
Born in Italy

This would have been recorded about 1942.

It is interesting to note that on the physical description of John it states "two toes off left foot"... sound familiar at all?

Tessa78, Yes, that matches information! Great!! Did not know about "two mssing toes"! Giovanni Pagliari was born January 25, 1879 (later known as John Pegley in US) Accumoli, Lazio, Italy
He was living in Bretz/Masontown/Corinth area of WV (Preston County) and probably did work as miner, since it was common job in this area. Yes, his wife's name was Minnie ... her maiden name was Dawson and she was born in WV. My grandmother's name was Tressa Stella Soccorsi (Pegley ... Pagliari originally) Birth: February 2, 1906 and she married my grandfather Guido Soccorsi from Colle, Arquata del Tronto, Ascoli Picena, Italy on July 29,1922 and they lived in Bretz, WV, too. That is where my father, Alfred Soccorsi, grew up. Thanks for the quick response with great information!! :) Cindi

Hi Cindi :-)

Don't know if that's your Family Tree on Ancestry, but I noticed that you have a SSDI listing for John Pegley.

Social Security Death Index

Name: John Pegley
SSN: 236-03-xxxx
Last Residence: 26542 Masontown, Preston, West Virginia, United States of America
Born: 25 Jan 1879
Died: Jul 1970
State (Year) SSN issued: West Virginia (Before 1951)

You can request John (Giovanni's) SS-5 application for a fee. It will contain the names of his parents, and his place of birth...

At this site, you can scroll down past the SSDI since you already have that info and go to "How to request..." Click on the link for "Requesting a Deceased Person's SS-5" and follow the directions...

Thanks! My cousin has been searching Soc Sec info...I don't know if she is getting SS-5 info ... I am researching Ellis Island records for individuals PLUS others who sailed on same ship, from same town (Arquata del Tronto) because, many times, my family did not travel alone. Usually at least 5 others traveled on same ship....sometimes sisters, brothers, wife, husband, children, cousins, friends, etc were traveling together. That is how I have found cousins with different last names.
