Donatantonio Robbe - Lavello, Potenza

Post by dangli »

The story about my great great grandfather was that he was a policeman who was killed on duty around 1901. He was born around 1870. Is there anyway to confirm this? Here is a picture of him. Is that indeed a policeman's uniform? I tried an email to the municipal police but never received a response.

Thanks,

Dangli

Have you tried writing to the comune for his birth and death records?

Address:

There are 23 persons with the surname "Robbe" in the current Italian Phone book in Lavello. You might try writing to someone to inquire, or ask for assistance...

I just sent off for his birth records (along with a few other record requests) but didn't ask for his death records. I will do that. I was wondering if perhaps there were published lists or perhaps a written history of the area that might have had some info of the period.

Usually there is a notation placed on the birth record recording the death date. So you may have the information you want if you receive the birth act from the comune. :-)

Well, by lists I mean some cities might keep "honor rolls" of policemen who have died while in the line of duty...I know the city in Connecticut that I grew up in had one.

And I guess my family has always wanted (if that's the right sentiment) to have his death be some sort of heroic/daring deed. If there were some official story that went with it.

But I'll write my letters tonight and send them off.

Thanks!

Ah, yes, I understand now :-D

Sometimes they have lists on monuments in the squares... Not sure if that is the case here.

Might want to write to someone in the town (preferably with the surname Robbe) who may be able to help you.

I'm not an expert, but that seems to be the uniform of Bersaglieri (by the feathers on the helmet), a corp of Italian Army.
As to monuments in Italian squares, they generally list soldiers who died in WW1 and WW2.

I agree it's the Bersaglieri uniform.
The person in the picture looks much younger than 30, it could be that he served in the army around the 1888-1890 and after he became a policeman...
