Trafficante...New York City (Brooklyn? Manhatten?)

Post by JamesBianco »

On the passenger ship list of my great grandmother, Giuseppa Marciano in 1920 she states she is coming to the United to visit her AUNT Antonina Trafficante, and also her fiancee Antonino Leone. I can't find this Antonina Anywhere, and am really trying to tie her into the family. If anyone ever heard of this woman Let me know!

Thanks

Unfortunately I don't, My great grandmother who was coming over's parents were both Marciano's so that is Antonina's likely surname. But Trafficante is not a name from her town of Carini, it's unheard of there, so I am thinking this aunt married in the USA.

Thanks Jim

I found only the manifest, I havent found her in the census. Since my great grandmother came in February of 1920 you would think this woman would be in the census. See if this link to the manifest works...she is #15

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 3372060075&

I dont know what else to do.
Thanks guys!

Hi James,

I found the following in the 1920 census, but give me some more time to search around.

Manhattan, NY - 1920 census

John Trafficante, age 64
Mary A., age 60
Marco, son
Frank, son
Joseph, son

The only thing I like about that census that it was in Manhattan and that Mary had the "A".

In the 1920 census in Rome, NY

Antonette, age 27, widow
living with parents Nancy & Alex Procintto

Do you know an age for Antonia? I also found a few with the spouse's name as Anna.

What year was Antonino Leone born?

Have a great day!
Trish

Oh wow Trish...thanks for that. I will have to order Anna M.'s. I can easily see how Antonina would be Anna in this country. Any suggestions on how to order those?

Sorry to be a pain.

Hi Jim,
Since you have the certificate number you can do one of two things, you can go through the list in the microfilm for the Certificate number. You have to scroll through several pages till you find the year and then the certificate number for NY.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50

Vol. [26-27], cert. no. 12501-13500, 1921 FHL US/CAN Film
2027464

(I just put the correct link in there for the death certificate)

This is the link for the actual Death Indexes to New York City

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50

This is the link for New York City Vital Records and you can see that it might be easier to get a copy from the microfilm than from the State.
http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/death.htm

It's very confusing but if you have questions, just ask.

As time consuming as it would be you could search the manifest and see if you are able to make any connection with regard to names or addresses, traveling companions...ect.
I pulled up 40+ Antonino Leone from south Italy.
Here is a link to all Trafficante:

I am suspecting that she met him here, as Traficante is not a name from the Town she was born in (Carini). Plus as all the children appear to have been born in the USA this seems plausible. She must have been here very early.

Thanks for everything, I printed it and will order her death record.
This should clear up the mess. Hopefully it's her! :)

*Update* and maybe a clue to who Antonina Trafficante really was...

I was scanning in some documents and came across the marriage of my Giuseppa Marciano to her husband Antonino Leone. You will remember that when Giuseppa came over she mentioned an Aunt "Antonina Trafficante" (see above) WELL... on her marriage in Manhattan to my great-grandfather in 1920 one of the two witnesses was Gaetano Tropicante!!

here is the image:

Antonino Leone to Giuseppina Marciano 1920 NYC

This is another clue possibly as to who this woman was and how she was my great-grandmother's Aunt...
