AMAZING development...All please read this post.

Post by JamesBianco »

I have a friend in the LDS church who lives in Salt Lake who told me that in 2 weeks, images of The microfilms will be available online for the public to view. Yes that means for example Film#xxxxxxxxxx, Nati, Matrimoni, Morti for a given town would be completely viewable online through the LDS site. Of course there is One snag, the authorities (and they were all contacted) would have had to agree to this. I realize that many will not, but think of the towns accross the world that Would!! This is incredible. I went to my local FHC last night and asked the assistant director, who smiled at me and said yes this was in progress. WOW!!!
aren't you all exited?

I think this is great.....but bittersweet, as my town of origin has not been microfilmed....
I am somewhat confused tho.....what do you mean by authorities being in agreement to this?

The local authorities still own the records. Each local must agree to the use of their microfilm. Some films in the FHC, the red reels, can not be xerox copied.

The amount of information that could be available is mindblowing.

All those times the copy machines did not work....all those times you had to re-order in the films....

This was anticipated, but I am amazed it happened this quickly.....

Great news....Thanks James!

Hello,
I just wanted to let you know that I work at the FHC and there is no charge for this service. You can visit your local FHC and do all the research you like and use the equipment for free. They only charge for printing copies (10 cents per copy) or if you want to order anything special. Good Luck with your search cioa!

Rose.........

The real question is can you access all microfilms this way? Can you access them from home? When does it start?

It is my understanding that these records will be on the web for people to view, not restricted to a Family History Center. I spoke with my Director again and she confirmed this. There might be a nominal charge to access the records as there is a certain expense involved on their part. But like anything involving the LDS church..the amount will be negligable.
