Philip Costello
Hi, Im new to this so please bare with me.
I am looking for information on my gggrandfather Philip Costello b. about 1870 Italy, came to usa about 1896
married to Minnie , son Philip b. 1890 NY and daughter Ida b. 1892
I cant find naturalization papers or where he came from. he lived in NYC and moved to NJ at some point supposidly he is some how related to the infamious Frank Costello.
another thing i remember Philips mother was suppose to be some kind of baroness in italy.
Not sure what the name was when they came over I know it was changed.

Re: Philip Costello
I believe that Philip (Filippo) Costello married at Minnie, but Minnie had the children... maybe she was widow.... in 1910 they was divorced....
I no found the marriage record, and that is strange; as a well I no found the births of Philip jr and Ida; Ida seeming born abt in 1890...
You know the Minnie maiden name?

Re: Philip Costello
no unfortunatly I dont know Minnie's maiden name, all i have is what i remember and that 1910 census. ty for helping
Re: Philip Costello
oh, maybe a trace.. I found, just now, a marriage record abt:
Surname Given Name Month of Marriage Day of Marriage Year
of Marriage County Certificate
Number
Castello Philip Mar 16 1911 Manhattan 6670
Zinn Minnie Mar 16 1911 Manhattan 6670
if it is correct, meaning that Minnie was not the first wife, but the second wife... and she was not the biological mother of Philip jr and Ida
Remaining the dilemma if really Philip jr and Ida was the Philip Costello children...
the possibilities are two:
or
-Philip arrived in USA in the 1896, married at a widow with 2 children, and he adopted the children; after divorced and he married at Minnie
or
-Philip arrived in USA before of 1890, married at a woman, the children was born, after divorced from wife and he married at Minnie
what you think abt that?

Re: Philip Costello
As an aside, I was quite surprised to learn that the name "Costello" is far more prevalant in Ireland than in Italy. Compare:
http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... stello&dv=
http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/search.ds
More importantly, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costello - "Costello is a surname in the English language. The name is an Anglicised form of the Irish Mac Oisdealbhaigh, meaning "son of Oisdealbhach"..."
Are you certain your heritage is Italian?

Re: Philip Costello
Yes, because family tridation has it Philip was related to Frank Costello reputed NYC mob boss, cousins from what I remember...
Frank came over his last name being Castiglia, and he Americanized it...
Frank was born in Lauropoli,Calabra, Italy
I've even tried tracing his relatives, but come up empty

Re: Philip Costello
Costello is not an Americanization of Castiglia (I have intimate knowledge of this subject). The story I have heard is that Francesco Castiglia changed his name to save his mother from embarrassment and to protect her from his enemies. As for family (oral) tradition, there are many, many, people here who can attest to how often it turns out to be mildly to wildly inaccurate.

Re: Philip Costello
I dont really care If I am related to him or not... I just want my grandchildren to know their heritage.
At this point I am following any leads to find information on Philip.
no census but 1910, no death records, no birth records....
I've got my Grandmother Ida costello from 1910 on, nothing before that.
