I saw a FIRST name on an Ellis Island manifest - MAZZARO.
It's a MALE.
I have never heard of an Italian first name of Mazzaro or Massaro. What else could it be? It was transcribed as Mazzaro and it looks like Mazzaro/Massaro on the actual manifest, but I can't find any more records of this person and I don't know how he could have changed his Italian name to be more "American".
At first, I thought maybe it was MASSIMO, but there is no way there is an "I" or an "M" in there...at least not that I can see!
By the way, the record is for MAZZARA LENTINI, born 1885, arriving Mar 30, 1908 from Palermo.
Any help is really appreciated!
Thank you!
Julia

Re: Help with a name, please...
Hi Julia,
i saw on 2^ ellis island manifest that Mazzaro Lentini was born in Mazzarino (province of caltanissetta). There is a Church dedicated to "S. Maria del Mazzaro". S. Marie of Mazzaro is the patron saint of Mazzarino and in Sicily frequently you find first name dedicated to patron saint.
take a look to wikipedia : the english version is not complete. the italian version talk about s.maria del Mazzaro.

best regards.
Vincenzo.

I'm searching lost relatives and descendant of my greatgrandfather Vincenzo Genualdi (or Gennaldi or Genuardi) and my greatgrandmother Concetta Davola (their sons: Angela, Carmela, Antonio, Bartolomeo, Ernesto, Simone, Riccardo, Maria) went in Chicago,Ill., and New Orleans, in 1880-1920 from Sicily. Other family related : Jacobucci or Jacopucci (from Central Italy).

Maybe Mazzaro can be the right first name, or Massaro it is hard to say... however Mazzaro Lentini leaving the mother Doretea Lentini nee Napoli in Palermo; Dorotea, last residence Palermo( but born in Mazzarino)travelled in 1910 with daughters: Crocifissa, Anna and Rocca Lentini ( all born in Mazzarino), and Dorotea leaving Maria Lentini sister in Palermo, joining at Massaro Lentini:
First Name: Dorotea
Last Name: Napoli
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Palermo, Sicily
Date of Arrival: Aug 02, 1910
Age at Arrival: 52y Gender: F Marital Status: W
Ship of Travel: San Giorgio
Port of Departure: Palermo
Manifest Line Number: 0027
pag 1 http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0027
pag 2 http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0027
so Massaro or Mazzaro could be right...
