Follow up question about Marriage in Italy

Post by djm1228 »

Hi - I noticed that there is a "publication" of the marriage of a family member in 1877. I could not find a record of the marriage in the index or in the acts of marriage for that year. Does that mean it never happened?

What was the date of the publication? Possibly the marriage was in 1878¿

Hi Carmine, The date of the publication was June 8 1877 so I assumed they would be married some time that year but I can't find anything. Is that the way it went back then? Thanks, Diane

I see three possibilities:

First, the marriage may have taken place during the following year. That type of delay would be unusual but not unheard of.

Second, the marriage took place in another town. Pubblicazioni were posted in both the town of the bride and that of the groom when they came from different places. However, the pubblicazione should note where the prospective bride and groom were born.

Third, the marriage never took place. The most common reason would be the death of one of the parties, thus you should check the death records. However, there could be other reasons - sometimes we just don't know what happened way back then.

I agree with John. :)

Question: do you know for a fact that this couple did marry and you are trying to find the documents, or did you stumble upon this Pubblicazione and you are now looking for the Atto di Matrimonio?

HI All, I found a publication of the event in 1877 but didn't find it on the acts or index of marriages for that year. I checked the acts of marriage for years 1876, 1877, 1878 and didn't find it either. i checked death records for 1877 and didn't find it. any other ideas. It's for Luisa Antonia Carlucci and Rocco Felice Cantore in Ruoti Italy. Thanks, Diane
