La Monte Family

Post by bblamonte »

Hello, I am looking for more information about my great grandfather and his family. His name is Frank Vincent La Monte and he was originally from Sicily, Italy. I know he came to America through Ellis Island and lived in NYC. I am trying to locate what town or city he came from in Sicily? Also I would like to find his father's and mother's names, or other possible extended family members. Any information or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Brian :-D

Can you provide Frank's approx. year of birth?
Do you know about when he arrived in US?
Wife's name? Married in NYC?
Names of children? Were they born in NYC?
Any details you can provide will help us to help you :-D !

Shot in the dark until I hear some additional details :-)

Possible marriage in NYC

LoMonte Frank V Apr 28 1935 Kings 6585 (this is the certificate #)
Bove Eleanor R Apr 28 1935 Kings 6585

If this is your GGF, you can send for this marriage record which should have information about his place of birth and his parents' names...

At this site...

Hi Tessa, great information! Thanks for finding those records. Do you think La Monte was misspelled as Lo Monte? The only other information I have is his diploma for The College of Pharmacy of Fordham University New York. Graduate in Pharmacy on June 13th 1917. Thanks again

Replied to your PM about the "Guerra" name...

As per your second PM - what kinds of "deeper" research do you want to do?

The marriage record above should give the bride and groom's place of birth and parents' names...

Send for it from NYC Vital records.

1920 Census for Frank Lomonte - pharmacist - living on First Avenue, NYC
Father's name is Vincent, mother is Josephine

NOTE - Frank is listed as married in this census, and the "Mary Lomonte" in the family list is identified as "daughter-in-law"
Your marriage certificate above may be a different Frank LaMonte, or a second marriage.

Tessa, wow this is some amazing stuff you found! I can not believe you found all that great imformation. Thank you for taking the time to find it. I am just wondering why the last name is Lomonte and not Lamonte or LaMonte did some of the family go by LaMonte and other by Lomonte? Thanks again

You will find the misspellings of names quite often in US Census records, and even other US records (like WWI and Marriage records)

Spelling wasn't a concern for those writing down this information, and sometimes it was difficult for them to understand the foreign accent of the immigrants providing the information. In addition, many of the immigrants could not read or write, and could not provide the correct spelling of their name.

The best way to find out the correct spelling - get a copy of the original birth record from Italy :-)

Hi!
I think we might have ancestors in common. My grestgrandfsther is Frank LaMonte, married to Josephine, his son Vincent is my grandfather. I think they also had other sons, Charles and James?
I've attached census records I've found.
