Looking for Guisseppi Donofrio

Post by jarnspiger »

I am looking for any information about Guisseppi Donofrio born about 1879 in Italy, maybe Alborona province. Supposedly arrived in US on the Ship Liguria on 2 May 1910 in Louisiana. Accompanying him would have been his wife Maria Felicia Caruso Donofrio. This was supposedly their honeymoon trip. Final destination was Orange New Jersey and a contact there was Rosaria Frazano. First born child believed to be Concetta Donofrio born 6 July 1912 in Orange, New Jersey.

I am unable to find him on a ship list or in the 1910, 1920 or 1930 census.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Jo,

there is a 1910 arrival manifest in NYC on the site Ellisislamd.org but the image is mislinked:

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/viewT ... 1334020137

Giuseppe d'Onofrio age 30 travelling with Maria Caruso D'Onofrio same age, them both were coming from Alberona...

Manifest is posted directly above. Note that although last residence was Alberona, the birthplace for both (last column of second sheet) is given as "Criggiano" which, of course, does not exist. Any thoughts on what it really says?

You can also use this helpful site to see the correct images of the mislinked arival manifests on the Ellisisland.org website:

http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/mm.htm?bac ... morse.org/

you have to digit:

Month: May
Day: 2
Year: 1910
Frame: 758 and 759
and then click on "Display"

Maria's age is 20...

Oh... I understand, possibly it was the ship's name making them think that they landed in Louisiana...

Right you are! When the manifest was transcribed, the comune from lines 14/15 was used.

Okay, so it is a very long way from Montefalco to Alberona; what do you think about that? I see a few Monte...'s in Foggia (the province which includes Alberona) but none which look like the birthplace listed on the manifest.

I don't know what to say Carmine, I tend to believe it was a mistake on the manifest because on the military draft card for the WW2 Giuseppe stated Alberona as place of Birth...

You may be correct; requires further research.

Did you notice that on the manifest (I think we can agree it is the correct manifest??) Maria's age appears to be 20 and Giuseppe's 30. Doesn't quite agree with the 1920 census...

Thank you all sooooo much for the prompt and interesting replies. Yes I believe that is the correct Manifest, the 2 May 1910 and I believe the client's information was confused about the Louisiana and Lusiana ship. The 1920 and 1930 census are also correct. The Joseph Caruso as a brother-in-law supports Maria's maiden name of Caruso. Thank you again so much. This is my first experience with Italian genealogy and it certainly was a great one. I will also be checking out the site with information about Alberona. It appears Joseph came to America earlier, perhaps established himself in New Jersey and then went back to Italy for a young wife. It seems the young wife left him and some of the children around 1923 and went to San Francisco first and then to Los Angeles.

Thank you again. What a great resource.

With regards,
