Glucini

Post by tawg »

I'm trying to figure out my Italian ancestry.

My grandfathers last name was Glicini. He was adopted in Parma, Italy. He came to the United States in 1921. I have looked at his passenger records from Ellis Island, and not much detail is given. When searching on EllisIsland.org I noticed the "alternate spellings" tab. There is one name which stands out - Maria Glucini - only because the spelling of the name is off by one letter. Also, the residency in Italy is not too far apart. I am wondering if there is a chance this is a relative of his? Assuming the last name was misspelled or off by a letter? Here is what was written on the ship manifest for her name.

I am trying to figure out the name that was listed. I can see "4th class passenger on board same steamer" but I can not read the name listed!

If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Both spellings are exceedingly rare in today's Italy, as seen here: http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... i&dv=&l=en.

Do keep in mind that not all of our Italian ancestors entered the US through Ellis Island or the earlier New York port, Castle Garden (http://www.castlegarden.org). Many thousands came in through Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and other ports.

By far, Ancestry . com is probably the best place to search all these records at once. If you would share your ancestor's full name and (at the least) year of birth, one of us may be able to find his manifest.

Thanks so much for responding!

His full name was Guiseppe Glicini. He was born 1892 or 1893. He came to the US in 1921 through Ellis Island.

Of course, I may have misunderstood... Did you already have Giuseppe's manifest?

I did, but only one of the pages! Thank you for your help :D

Now I'm wondering if Maria Glucini was somehow related to him? The surname is only off by one letter, and it's leading me to believe there is a connection there. However, I may be wrong!

I am leaning toward the possibility that Glucini is the correct spelling.

However, what has really piqued my curiosity is this:

On the manifest, Giuseppe Glicini says his nearest relative in Italy is "the father, Baselli Clemente" and (on the second sheet) the person he is coming to stay with in the US is "the brother, Boselli Pietro".

Very odd...

Why is Giuseppe's surname Glicini when his father and brother are Baselli/Boselli? (only the latter exists today in Corniglio telephone listings: http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... =Corniglio

Interesting!

He was adopted, so from what I know, Pietro Boselli was the oldest of the sons of the adoptive family he went to when he came into the US.

I do have the name of the Orphanage that he was in, in Parma. Do you think there is a way to trace or get more information if I have the orphanage name and his ID number?

Interesting...

So, do you think Giuseppe eventually found his real father (and brother) or possibly he was adopted by the Boselli family?

Of the surname Glicini, this may be a one-off created by the orphanage. I note that Glicine is the Italian word for wisteria, a flowering plant.

http://www.wordreference.com/iten/glicini

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisteria

As you know, orphanages had various ways of inventing surnames for children. Naming them after flowers is not unheard of.

No, he never found his "real" family. Boselli was his adoptive family.

I am thinking though that there must be some person I could possibly contact to find out more information, yes? I did click the Italian whitepages link you had posted, and I do see one "Glicini". Do you think this would be worth a shot at contacting her? Or what other ideas/advice do you have?

Thank you again :)

Hi everyone! I just wanted to update that I have another interesting tidbit to share.

I did more researching last night. I noticed that the handwriting on the front and back of the letter are indeed different.

I decided to sign up on ancestry.com and now I think I have another lead!

According to this translation, http://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/topic22264.html
If Margherita Masetti was the one who brought the child to the town hall, it means she definitely knew who the mother was. I did a search on Ancestry and found a Caterina Masetti - who boarded a ship in 1937, and was born in 1873. Interestingly enough, the relative she listed was "Margherita". This is leading me to believe that Caterina was actually Guiseppe's mother! On the ship manifest, it also states she had another surname - Campini. I'm assuming she got married sometime after she gave birth to Guiseppe.

I'm now trying to find any sort of marriage certificate for Caterina Masetti/Campini. Ancestry.com does not appear to have this. Where else can I look? I would like to find the name of her husband.

It also listed she left a child behind in Italy - his name was Giovanni in Asti, Italy.

Thank you all again! I feel like I'm finally on to something :D

Caterina MASSETTI/MAZZETTI (married at Maurizio CAMPINI) was born in Mombercelli (Asti province); Maurizio Campini and Margherita daughter was born both in Rocca D'Arazzo (Alessandria province); this infos by the trip of Maurizio Campini in travel with Margherita daughter, and Pierino ALLIANO ( 4 months old), son of Margherita; final destination Santa Cruz, California joining at son in law Mario ALLIANO ( in USA becoming: ALLINO), husband of Margherita:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Margherita Campini Name: Margherita Campini
Arrival Date: 12 Dec 1913

Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (North) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Genova
Port of Arrival: New York, New York

so Caterina MASSETTI/MAZZETTI and Maurizio CAMPINI most probably married in Rocca d'Arazzo...
