The Grande Mystery

Post by ibeirish »

Hey guys, I could use some help in finding some info on my relatives:
Dominick Grande was born 13 Feb 1890 in Italy.
He died in Riverhead (Suffolk County) NY on Nov 1978.
He was married to Madeline "Adeline" Falci.
She was born 22 Feb 1894 in Manhattan, NY and also died in Suffolk County, NY (2 July 1988).
The couple had 3 children:
Gloria, Annabelle, and Albert.
There has been a mystery about Dominick Grande in that there is a story about him being from a family of nobility in Italy, and because he was of noble blood, his family sent him to America so that he wouldn't have to fight in World War 1. I would love to find out if this old family story is true, if possible.
I'd also like any info that anyone can find about Dominick and Madeline - I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks so much!,
Ashley

Possible manifest. Immigration date 1907 does not agree with census (above - 1900), but this is not unusual. All other info seems to agree.

Hi, the marriage record:

Grande Dominick Aug 18 1921 2707 (1921) Queens
Falce Adele Aug 18 1921 2707 (1921) Queens
if it is right as I think, the 1930 census is correct and in same census Mary Falci head with sons, maybe the mother of Adele (Adeline)...
now:
because he married in 1921, and in the WWI draft registration card posted above
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9664/grandeww1.jpg
he seeming married and with children, cannot be the same Domenick Grande also if the birthdate is similar;

instead seeming right the WWI draft registration card -found by Carmine- abt Domenick Grande born in Bacoli; also clerk as in the 1930 census...
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Domenick Grande Name: Domenick Grande
City: Manhattan
County: New York
State: New York
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 13 Feb 1889
Race: White
FHL Roll Number: 1786970
DraftBoard: 167

I cannot be sure abt the 1920 census, but just I found:

1920 United States Federal Census
about Domick Grindi Name: Domick Grindi
[Domina Grindi]
[Donick Grande]
Home in 1920: Bronx Assembly District 7, Bronx, New York
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Nephew
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Sex: Male
Year of immigration: 1906
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James Calandred 33 (Colandrea or: Di Colandrea)
Josephine Calandred 29
Florence Calandred 6
Adolf Caranande 28 ( Carannante right spelling) brother in law
Domick Grindi 31 imm. 1906...

just my two cents...

If you decide the Domenico Grande from Bacoli is the correct person, you can write to the comune to request his birth details. This may clear up any questions concerning his heritage.

You can use a letter like this one, or search the forum for other examples:
07 luglio 2011 [luglio is July; month names in italian are written lower case]

[your name]
[your address]

STATI UNITI D'AMERICA - USA

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Bacoli
Via G. De Rosa, 125
80070 Bacoli NA
ITALY
[the comune has an email address you can try if you want: servizio.statocivile@comune.bacoli.na.it]

Egregi Signori,

Mi chiamo [your name here], ed abito negli Stati Uniti all'indirizzo sopradetto.

Vi scrivo affinché mi aiutiate a reperire:

* Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita

per il mio [your relationship to the person - see below]:

* GRANDE DOMENICO nato nel Comune di Bocali, in data 13 febbraio 1890 o 1899, paternità [his father's given name if you know it else 'incerto'], maternità [mother's full maiden name if you know it "SMITH JANE" else 'incerto']

Vi prego di farmi sapere quanto dovuto per il servizio e per i costi di spedizione.

Distinti saluti,

[your signature]

Birth/marriage/death photocopies of original registry pages are called: Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte. These are more difficult to read but contain lots of additional useful information compared to...

Birth/marriage/death computer-generated (sometimes hand-written) extracts are: Estratto Per Riassunto Per Atto Di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte

Most comuni do not charge for these documents. Do send a large, self-addressed (but not stamped) envelope if possible; be sure to put "STATI UNITI D'AMERICA - USA" in the final line of your address. It is also a good idea to include a copy of your ID (driver's license, for example) as some comuni will not process requests without it.

Thank you so much Marty. I have seen these two documents and noticed that the Dominick you found says he was married. From what I have, he was single when he came here to the states. Because you sent me these, you made me look at the WW1 draft in a different way in that I just found his town- Bacoli, Naples, Italy. Thank you for looking and sending me these things.

Yes this is him, because his wife Adeline is on the relative section as well. Is there a way to find out if there was a reason why he didn't serve? Because I know he didn't from family stories. Thank you so much for finding these things, I'm looking into the manifest you sent me, and hopefully that's him.

Oh wow, where would I be able to locate the marriage record? Would it say Adele's (Adeline) parents, Mary and Gerardo "George" Falci?

Yeah the WWI Draft card that has Dominick married isn't my great grandfather. He was single and his birthday was Feb 13 1889/1890. I've seen the 1920 census and I'm not sure if it's him because I really don't have much knowledge of him, he spoke very little english. Thank you so much for finding this stuff out suanj. =)
