Surnames

Post by lilbees »

I have the following surname and am trying to locate an area it is from.

Ungara?

I don't believe it is a proper Italian surname. What could it be? This person is married to a Paolantonio.

Thanks for any help.

Both Ungari and Ungaro are widespread. Perhaps you are really looking for one of these?

The given name (American) is Paulina Ungara married to Giovanni Paolantonio. On an arrival for Giovanni it stated Casacalenda as last residence. But their original arrival goes back to the 1880s according to census and family.

I did find an Ungara family living in Canada but don't know if there is any connection.

Are you sure the spelling is correct? Could it be Nugara instead of Ungara? If so, this surname can be found in the province of Avellino, Campania region.

Not sure of anything at this point. One of the family members put Potenza as a place of birth of one of the children. Giorgio "George Andrew" Paolantonio.

Some additional info might be helpful: approximate year of birth for Paulina? Where did she and Giovanni reside?

Bingo, you have Pauline's immigration. There is one child's name I don't have. Will have to check it out.

Thank you all so much. This has been great. I have corrected the surname to Ungaro.

Really appreciate you all.

P.S. If you find anything else let me know.

This is not relevant for your search, but Ungaro is also common in the area of Salerno province you know. Particularly, in the town of Nocera Inferiore, it is an ancient surname documented since 1200 (of course, as a "noble" family).

Paolina Ungaro's father was a jew from Hungary and his name was aron ungar and her mother was a jew named Anna Cohen whose mother was from Egypt and father was from Turkey but that last name that they have as in ( ungaro and ungara) are Italian but she herself is not ethnically Italian she is sephardic and ashkenazi Jewish.
