Searching for Desimone

Post by alching »

My Granmother's Name was Lucile Desmond (Desimone). Her father was Pasquale Desimone who emmigrated to USA probably in 1890's. His wife was Louisa Lafrano (sp). they had several children including Angelo, Dominick, Mary, Louise, Lucile. All from Utica Ny. Any help in finding their Italian roots, immigration info would be greatly appreciated.

However 1920 census says Pasquale and Louisa arrived 1893 and 1892 respectively and both naturalized in 1897. If true, this means that most or all of their children would have been ineligible to inherit Italian citizenship. However, the 1930 census (above) indicates that Pasquale has submitted first papers ("Pa") and than Louisa is naturalized already...

1920 United States Federal Census about Pasquale Damone

The second page of the passport application Marty linked to above includes a photo which may be of interest.

Also note that the passport application states that Pasquale naturalized in 1903 in the Oneida County Court. You may want to inquire here http://www.ocgov.net/oneida/historicalrecords about obtaining copies of the naturalization papers.

I will also make note of the fact that there exists a second frazione in addition to the one Marty mentioned above, Frazione Laiano, Comune di Sant'Agata dei Goti, Provincia di Benevento, Regione di Campania, Southern Italy.

Finally, since it was not entirely common for people to list a frazione as their place of birth, I would also consider the possibility that Latiano was intended, Comune di Latiano, Provincia di Brindisi, Regione di Puglia, Southern Italy, or even that there may have been in the past a comune named Laiano - possibly one of the two frazioni already mentioned was once an independent comune.

suanj, I thought that might be the correct manifest, but as you know, these early manifests contain very little useful information so it is not easy to be certain.

What do you think about the cognome of Louisa (Luisa?)? Lafrano does not seem to exist in Italy. Possibly it should be Lufrano?

Louisa's mother, from the 1920 census:

Hi Carmine, abt the surname is Lofrano; Pasquale De Simone and Luigia Lofrano( or Lo Frano) marriage announcement:
http://www.fultonhistory.com/Process%20 ... ehtml&.pdf

abt Louise/Louisa/Luigia LOFRANO, I found that surely was a LoFrano family in 1910 Utica, NY:

Giuseppe/Joseph Lofrano b. 1845 abt IT imm. 1890
Annina Lofrano wife b. 1850 abt IT imm 1890
Vincenzo /James Lofrano b. 15 Oct 1888 IT imm. 1890

and I believe also that it was another daughter, and other children, and maybe also your Louisa DeSimone:

Caroline Lofrano
-first marriage: Dominick Zammiello
-second marriage: Ralph Guzzetti

by this obit seeming that this Caroline was born in Sicignano

http://www.fultonhistory.com/Process%20 ... ehtml&.pdf

now I know not if really Louisa/Luigia DeSimone nee Lofrano was the Caroline sister, but I am positive abt that....
