Sulfaro ancestors in Cucuracci, Messina, Sicily

Post by Joe4322 »

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for any information on the Sulfaro surname from Cucuracci.
My grandfathers name was Antonio, born in 1876. Immigrated to USA in 1900.

My grandmothers name was Margarette or Domenica, also came from Cucuracci. She was born in 1887.

Any information will help.

Thank you
Joe

Hi Joe :-)

The town is CURCURACI...
Here is some information about it.
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/sicili ... uraci.html

What records have you already found? Ship manifests, censuses, military?

Do you happen to know your GM's maiden name? Italian women kept their maiden name and traveled with it.

Is this your GF Antonio Sulfaro - living in Boston - 1930 Census?

1930 United States Federal Census
about Antonio Sulfaro
Name: Antonio Sulfaro
Birth Year: abt 1876
Birthplace: Italy
Home in 1930: Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts
View Map
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Margerite Sulfaro
Household Members:
Name Age
Antonio Sulfaro 54
Margerite Sulfaro 46
Josephine Sulfaro 17
Frances Sulfaro 14
Annie Sulfaro 5
Antonio Sulfaro 1 7/12

On the Census it looks like the family immigrated in 1920 :-)
But Antonio's immigration date looks like 1900. If that's the case, he probably made many trips back and forth :-)

In this POSSIBLE 1920 Census for Antonio Sulfaro (age is right) in Boston...
he is living with his Uncle "Parole Lenbo" at 33 "P" St.
Antonio is listed as married (no wife listed in the census - arrived later in the year? - the census date is January 5th) and he states that he immigrated in 1917...

In the records I have found it seems we may be dealing with two Antonio Sulfaro's in Boston?

The 1930 Census has his wife as Margarite (and it names the children)
Is this the correct Antonio? Wife and children list immigration as 1920.

On the WWI registration card (posted below), Antonio's wife is Domenica and she is living in Boston with him. This card would have been filed in 1918

Ages are very close - about 1874 and 1876 as year of birth for Antonio... BUT I don't think the WWI card belongs to the Antonio that is listed above in the 1930 Census.

OK - I can see now where the DOMENCA and MARGARITE are both possible first names - :-)

Here is a manifest for 1920 March - arriving BOSTON

Domenica Sulfaro, 37 (DOB about 1883) traveling with daughters:
Antonia, age 12
Giuseppina, age 5 (could be Josephine on 1930 census)
Francesca, age 3 (could be Frances on 1930 census)

They are going to husband/father Antonino Sulfara at " 33 St." Boston, Mass.
Leaving father/grandfather Giuseppe in Curcuraci (misspelled Cuccuracci)

Good afternoon T,

I just logged on and saw your reply. Thank you. I do not have any information on my mother's side yet. I was concentrating on my fathger's side first. I am waiting for films from L.D.S. My family name is Russo. As for my Grandmother's maiden name, I was told it is also Sulfaro. I was told that my grandmother and grandfather were cousins, first or second, I don't know.

Yes, that would explain why she is listed as Domenica SULFARO on the manifest. Italian women kept their maiden names, and traveled using the same... :-)

You just showed me something that my family and I have been wondering about for many years. That is how did it come to be that my grandfather came to this country in the first place. This is the first that I heard that he had an uncle who sponsered him.Wait unbtil I tell my brother and sisters. They will be amazed.

Also T, where did you get these census's?

Hi T,

The manifest is correct. Antonia (Anntoinette) is my mother. This is again the first time I have seen this information. I see on the manifest that the ship was the "CRETIC"
sailed from Naples on March 5, 1920.
I tried to print the page, but it will not let me for some reason. I will just write the information. Can you tell me how to get the manifest for other ships?

Thanks so much T. You have made my night.

Hi Joe :-)

Glad the information was helpful!

I pulled these documents from Ancestry.com (a paid subscription).
If you enlarge the image you should then be able to print it by using the right mouse button, save the image to your computer, then print it.

If you have trouble, I would be happy to email the images to you...
Send me your email in a private message (the PM button under my user name)

This manifest was for a Boston arrival. I found it on Ancestry.
However, if you had ancestors who came through New York, you can use the free Ellis Island site to search.
www.ellisisland.org

Another helpful site to search is the free Family Search site. You will need to register, but it is free.

Good luck!

Good morning T.,

Thank you for that information. The problem I think is with my printer. Thank you for that offer. You have already done enough. I will subscribe to Ancestry.com. There is other information I have to research anyway. You may see further posts later on.

A big thanks to you.
