Maffei in America

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Maffei in America

Post by ElisaMaf »

Hi Everybody!
I'd like to know some information about my relatives.
My great grandfather and his two brothers emigrated in the United States in 1902(or later). My great grandfather came back in Italy but his brothers stayed there. Their names are: Maffei innocente, that was born in Treviso bresciano in 1879; Maffei Angelo, that was born in Treviso bresciano in 1886. I think they lived in Alliance, Ohio but i'm not sure. I'd like to know if they had a family and to trace them but i need your help.
Thamks a lot.

There is a Family Tree for Angelo Maffei on Ancestry owned by ronaldraga :-)

Angelo Maffei died 1952
His wife Florence Canonico Maffei died in 1982
Their daughter Edith Maffei (b. 1917) married Pete Raga (b. 1912)
Edith died in 2004 and Pete in 1963. (both in Alliance, Ohio)

It appears from the family tree that they had 3 children, but no names are provided - that usually means that those individuals are living...

Elisa,

What was the name of your GGF?
I have found a manifest with INNOCENZO MAFFEI, age 26; and STEFANO MAFFEI, age 18; from Degagna...arriving in NY in 1903. However, it looks like they were going to Massachusetts, not Ohio.
They also state they are going to GIOVANNI MAFFEI (noted as "fr" - friend or father?)

Thank you very much for this information! :)
Now I try to answer your questions. The name of my great grandfather is Stefano, his brothers' name are Innocente(or Innocenzo) and Angelo and their father name is Giovanni(John). I think what you found is all right.
One day I found in a website the name of Roberta Maffei that lives in Alliance, Ohio, could she be one of the daughter of some of my relatives?
How can i know who are the children of my relatives and if they are still alive? I'd really like to know them.
Thanks again! :)

Based on Tessa's research finds, I believe that John Maffei, Angelo's son in the 1930 census, married Fernanda Enrica Baroni. Below is Fernanda's obituary from 2010; it lists three people who would have been Angelo's grandchildren.

The Alliance Ohio Review

May 12, 2010

"Fernanda Enrica Maffei died on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the age of 89 years and 11 months of acute pancreatitis. She was born June 17, 1920, in Tenno, Italy, the oldest child of Zefferino Leo Baroni and Ida Celestina Furletti. She immigrated to the United States on the ship Presidente Wilson, through Ellis Island in the early 1920s. In June of 1941, she married John Lawrence Maffei in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Alliance, Ohio, of which she is still an active member. This was the second wedding to be held in that new church. To this marriage, three children were born, Cheryl Florence, David John and Marcia Ida.

She lived most of her life in Alliance. She was a homemaker, housewife and creative seamstress. After her children were raised, she went to work for Babcock and Wilcox Research in the dietary department, but most of her work days were spent at Copeland Oaks, a retirement community in Sebring, Ohio. She was one of its first employees. She enjoyed her job immensely and ended her 25-year career in a supervisory position, retiring in 1991. Fern was well loved by co-workers and residents alike.

Fern's love of travel took her to many places in the United States. She also enjoyed foreign travel, visiting Israel, Iceland, Italy and other faraway places. She appreciated the outdoors, taking many walks and hikes in different parks and nature settings. She was an avid reader and Scrabble player.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Eldridge, and husband, Franklin, of Lincoln, Neb.; her son, David, and wife, Shirley, of Minerva, Ohio; and her daughter, Marcia Maffei, and partner, Peter Eberhardt, of Eugene, Ore.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her sister, Daria Baroni Giovanelli of Louisville, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Delfo Baroni.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 14, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Donald L. Feicht as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alliance Visiting Nurse and Hospice, 885 S. Sawburg Ave., Alliance, Ohio 44601, or Bel Air Senior Living Community, 2350 Cherry Ave., Alliance, Ohio 44601.

Arrangements are by Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home, 1000 S. Union Ave., Alliance, Ohio 44601. This obituary may be viewed and condolences may be sent to the family online at http://www.sharerfuneralhome.com.
