GGfather, Antonio Amato from Bracigliano, wife Rosa Danise

Anthony Amato Birth Certificate 1914.jpg
Hi all, My name is Jennifer Amato Matheny and I am new to this amazing website! I have been having such a difficult time finding my Amato family history. My grandfather was Anthony Omero Amato. He was born 8 Oct 1914 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the youngest of 6 children. He had 6 older sisters, Josephine (Guiseppina), Anna, Jennie (Giovanna), Alice, Amy, Jean (Gina). I found two ships manifests where the sisters, all except Amy, who was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, came to New York from Bracigliano with their mother Rosa Danise (Danice). My Grandfather's parents died when he was small and he was raised by his sisters, so we know very little about his family. He always told us his family was from Naples, but in actuality, that is the town they shipped out from. Does anyone have any of these family on their trees? I am so desperate to find any information. When I got started, all I knew was my GGfather's name was Antonio Amato and my GGmother's name was Rose. I found my grandfather's birth certificate from Chicago, but the person dictating the names misspelled them wrong. Thankfully they had his middle name, Omero, or I might never have found it. That is how I found Rosa's maiden name was Danise and then found the manifests. Our family never even knew these ancestors lived in Springfield Massachusetts for a while! I would appreciate any help in finding my GGparent's history. Thank you so much! Not sure If I am doing this right, but below is the link to the ships manifest. It was from 27 Aug 1913, Port of departure, Naples

Hello Jennifer,
Welcome to the Forum!
Great job linking your 1913 manifest. Since their names are lined off, they didn't actually sail on that ship. There should be additional manifests: the one before since there is a US born child, and the one after this one. Also manifests after abt 1906 have two pages. You should be able to view the other page (either next page or previous page) on the Ellis Island site. These manifests should have their place of birth in the last column on page 2 (as you stated - several were born in 'Bracigliano'). These comunes are where you'll find your family's records in Italy.
Do you have your US records (census, military, naturalization) there may be more clues that can help in your search.

Since ther3 are no records available at Family History LIbrary for Bracigliano, Salerno province you will have to write for civil records of the family

The brother in law of Antonio Amato looks like it could be ANTONIO BUONOCONTE (in Springfield).

Hi Valarie :-D

Yes, his sister is listed after daughter Giuseppa. You can see last name, but not her first name. She is 25, SINGLE, and lists occupation as servant...
The brother-in-law is probably Rosa's brother - Antonio Buonoconte.

Hi Valarie! :-)
GREAT FINDS...
I believe the son-in-law's first name is ANTONO - the "g" from Washington in the line above makes the second letter look like an "l"...
The spelling Buoniconti is a good guess... similar to the Buonoconte I see on the manifest of 1901 for Antonio Amato :-)
