Cretella

Post by Boberek18 »

Hello. My GG Grandmothers birth name was Filomena Cretella. She was born in southern Italy near Naples or Salerno in or about 1875. She married Francesco Proto(a) about 1895. I don't know much about her except for her maidan name and birth year. If anybody knows that name or can help me find it, much would be appreciate fm. Also if you can help me find her and her husbands graves that would be great. She died in 1955 and he died in 1959. Thanks

Did death occur in Italy or somewhere else?

POSSIBLE 1930 US Census for Frank and Filomena at Meeker Ave, Brooklyn

Living next door is William Proto and his family. William was also born in Italy and arrival date is same as Frank and Filomena. Do you know if this is a son?

SAME family in 1910 Census? ALL born in Italy :-)

Searched for an arrival for the family. If the above Census is correct... here is a possibility for an arrival manifest... Names are slightly different, but they may have chosen to "americanize" them when they settled in Brooklyn.

Arriving July 17, 1903 (agrees with 1910 census) on the SS Manilla
Francesco/Frank is 32 (making birth about 1871), and a fruit seller/merchant, from Amalfi
Wife is listed as Crofimena, age 28 (making birth about 1875)
Children are Matteo, 7; Antonio, 4; Agnese, 2. Could they be William, Tony and Mary? The ages are correct.
They indicate they are going to Francesco's brother Felice Mietrale(?) in NY. This would need to be searched.

given name: Francesco
surname: Proto
last place of residence: Amalfo
date of arrival: 17 Jul 1903
age at arrival: 32y
ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
port of departure: Napoli
port of arrival: New York City
gender: Male
marital status: M
us citizen:
ship of travel: Manilla

HERE is a possibly WWI Registration Card for William
. Address is same street as 1930 Census...

IF Francesco and Filomena are from AMALFI - you will need to write to the comune to request birth and marriage records.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Municipio, 5
84011 Amalfi (SA)
Italy

Help with letters in Italian...
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... talrecords

There are currently 29 listings for PROTO in the Italian Phone Book in AMALFI
http://www.paginebianche.it/ricerca?qs= ... i+%28SA%29
And 15 in Naples...
http://www.paginebianche.it/persone?qs=Proto&dv=Napoli

Likewise, there are 28 listings for CRETELLA in Naples
http://www.paginebianche.it/persone?qs= ... &dv=Napoli
AND 11 listing in Amalfi :-)

Help with writing to one or more of these "potential" relatives...

Oh my god! Yes. That's them. I saw the manifest but I was confused with the names. His brothers name was Michele(Michael). All of the census' are correct. I know they had a child after they came to America but it died before 1910 so I think the frank Proto that died when he was 13 days old is that child. Thanks so much. I hope we will be in contact soon!
