Death in East Stroudsburg, PA
In 1909 my great-grandparents Michele (Mike or Michael) Leone and Rose Scaneo emigrated to the United States leaving my grandfather, who was ill, with an aunt in Sicily. They fixed their residence in Jamestown NY and had 5 more children. In about 1935, for reasons that no one has been able to explain to me, my great-grandfather left his family and moved to East Stroudsburg PA. In the 1940 census he is with the wrong surname of Mione and resident at 11 Crystal Street. It had to be a very poor house, maybe a shack, and he lived alone. Mike Leone died in East Stroudsburg on May 16, 1948, but no one of my relatives today knows the location of his grave, nor even how he spent his last years. I am looking for someone who can help me learn more about his last years and above all to find his grave, that I intend to visit on my next trip to the United States. Thank you wholeheartedly.

I noticed on the census his occupation is laborer, project. Since this was during the Depression, perhaps he went to E Stroudsburg to work on a WPA (Works Progress/Projects Administration) or CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) project taking place in the area. The WPA and CCC were governmental agencies which employed people in road, bridge, dam, forestry and other projects.
Also, have you tried contacting Monroe County to obtain a copy of his death certificate; it should show where he was buried.

Re: Death in East Stroudsburg, PA
In my opinion, the easiest way to locate his grave is to order a copy of his death record from the state of PA. It will list the cemetery where he is buried. In dealing with the state of PA the only way you can obtain a death record is to order it from the Public Records -Death Indices: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/se ... 804&mode=2Marcello_DAleo wrote: Mike Leone died in East Stroudsburg on May 16, 1948, but no one of my relatives today knows the location of his grave, nor even how he spent his last years. MICHAEL LEONE L500 (In the Russell Soundex) Pg 192/226 Looks like he passed in Fairview Township, Erie County (Code 25) on 15 July 1948.

Then go to http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/se ... ords/20686 download the death application form and complete. I will warn you i have ordered many records from the state of PA and it takes at least 6months for the information to come back.
Hope this helps

**EDIT
It looks as if Jamestown NY is much closer to Fairview Twp, Erie County then East Stroudsburg, PA are you positive about him being in the East Stroudsburg area?
