The Arbëreshë people of Sicily.
Does anyone know of a good resource for the Arbëreshë families who left Albania for Sicily in the early 1600's? I have just discovered an ancestress from the Arbëreshë colony of Piana degli Albanesi near Palermo. The LDS church has not filmed the church records and I was wondering if they exist back to the 1600's still.
Thanks !

Re: The Arbëreshë people of Sicily.
Jim,
I remember John Cusimano wrote a few articles some years ago which I published on my site.
I removed these articles I think in 2001 because he started his own site but I don't know the url and can't find anything using Google where I tried the keys "Cusimano+stradiotti".
Maybe I can find an old backup of my site with the articles, but I will also try to contact him to ask permission to publish his articles again.

Thank you Edmondo and Suanj (that looks like a great site, it is too bad I can't read most of it ) I will do a search for that Cusimano site.

This information was also on a website, www.leaptoad.com, but I believe John Cusimano has closed down that site now.
You may want to type in "Arberesh" in Google to see what sites in English may appear.

Yup he sure has closed the site down sadly. I only have a small Arberesh line back in 1650 (Norcia) but am very eager to read more about these people.
Thanks!

Are the Rivelis not good enough?:JamesBianco wrote:Does anyone know of a good resource for the Arbëreshë families who left Albania for Sicily in the early 1600's? They do go back to 1607.
I do wish they had the Churches.
I'd love to trace it all the way back to Albania.
Please keep me updated on this, since my first ancestor's (off the boat) father seemed to have come from there (he was from Santa Cristina Gela, a town over).

Re: The Arbëreshë people of Sicily.
I should take another look at the Piana Rivelli's. I did that about a year ago, and for some reason I wasn't happy with what I found (or didn't find) I have 4 other ancestors from Piana also, all having come to Carini in the mid to late 1600's. I would love to get at the church records!!

Here's a link you might find interesting. He actually talks about Piana.

Also, can you tell me which link you found that you can't translate about John Cusimano. I would like to see it. Thanks

Hey Trish, I don't know John. I would love to get in touch with him as he seems to have Norcia as far back as I do (mid 1600's). Does anyone know how to reach him? Sounds like a fascinating guy.
Jim
PS--I just emailed John at Stradiotti@aol.com regarding my Norcia line. I am hoping he responds!

I'm still trying to find things for you, but I keep running into dead ends.
Now about this link:
http://www.arbitalia.it/
Go to AltaVista and put the whole link in the "translate link", clink on Italian to English and most of it translates.
http://world.altavista.com/
The one link on history is so interesting.

Hope this helps,
