About a week ago I posted about my great-grandfather who had the name Projetto Ignazio Lombardo when he came to the US. His birth record listed his parents as Achille Proetto Lombardo and Margherita Sacco. Today I found a marriage record for Achille Projetto and Margherita Sacco:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n607776063
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n607776063
This is a really long record, and I've gotten some of the basics, but I'm still really confused about this. It does mention a Salvatore Lombardo, and a Gioacchino Lombardo (I was always told that Gioacchino was the name of my gggrandfather). I'm not sure what they have to do with the marriage. Can someone please help me sort this out? What exactly does it say about the groom's parents?

Re: Projetto ancestor
Marriage: 20 Apr 1871-Sciacca
Groom: Achille Projetto 31 old, mason, born in Caltabellotta, resident in Sciacca, son of unknown parents but raised from Antonia Grado ( maybe biological mother)
Bride: Margherita Sacco 23 old, no profession, born and domiciled in Sciacca, daughter of late Pietro, farmer, and of late Antonina Segreto.
by law, art. 194, the groom and the bride, recognizing as own son born out of wedlock, born in Sciacca on 12 Sep 1869 #392, named Salvatore Lombardo son of Gioacchino Lombardo and Margherita Sacco.
shortly:
Margherita Sacco had a child, born previous of her marriage, named Salvatore Lombardo and it was registered in Sciacca civil records office, as son born out of wedlock of Gioacchino Lombardo and Margherita Sacco. That on 12 sep 1869.
On 20 Apr 1871 Margherita married at Achille Projetto, and both declaring that Salvatore Lombardo was no the son of Gioacchino Lombardo and Margherita Sacco, but son of Achille Projetto and Margherita Sacco.. that is a strange way for the adoption of Salvatore Lombardo by Achille Projetto; so Salvatore had Lombardo projetto last names.
Really... the child, Salvatore Lombardo was the son of Gioacchino Lombardo and Margherita Sacco.
Margherita married at Achille and wanted own child Salvatore at home with the her husband (Achille), so in the marriage act, Achille declared that the child was his son and of Margherita Sacco.
Just a way for to legalize a strange situation and to give also projetto surname at child, and so all rights as own child.

suanj

Re: Projetto ancestor
This is the marriage record of Achille Proietto, unmarried, age 31, mason, born in Caltabellotta, living a few years in Sciacca, son of parents unknown, raised by Antonia Grado, and Margarita Sacco, unmarried, age 23, without profession, born and living in Sciacca, daughter of the late Pietro, peasant farmer, and Antonina Segreto.
The record also includes a statement by the newlyweds that recognize their own child as legitimate, which child had been begotten by them and was presented to the stato civile of Sciacca and inscribed on the registers of births on 12 September 1869, numero d'ordine 392, by the name of Salvatore Lombardo and understood as the natural son of Gioacchino inteso Lombardo and Margarita Sacco, born the same night at seven o'clock.
There is no explanation that I can find to explain why the groom goes by the name Achille Proietto, yet apparently fathered a child as Gioacchino Lombardo. I also don't know the significance of the word "inteso" inserted in that name or whether it's actually part of the name itself. I would suggest going to the Caltabellotta records, circa 1840, and search for Achille Proietto's birth record. Keep in mind that the birth records of foundlings are sometimes found in the diversi records or in part II of the birth records. You should also take a look at the above referenced birth record of Salvatore Lombardo.

Hi Raffaella - I was writing as you were posting. Thanks for the explanation. Any thoughts on the word "inteso"? Ciao

Re: Projetto ancestor
Thank you, Suanj and John, for helping. I'm still puzzled how Achille Projetto could eventually become Achille Lombardo. This is my great-grandfather's (Ignazio Lombardo) birth record:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... :976724588
And Salvatore Lombardo's birth record:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1125441428
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1125441428
There is a notation in the margin next to Salvatore's record about the change of father, although I don't have an exact translation. Another member on here (adelfio) helped me quite a bit with this.
Also, it was family tradition that Ignazio's father was named Gioacchino Lombardo...he even named his first-born son Gioacchino. There must be a whole lot more to the story here that I'll probably never figure out. I will have to figure out where Caltabellotta is and see if I can find any records there.

when you found " inteso" or " dico" after a surname, with the surname repeated, it simply means that, for exemple: "Salvatore Lombardo inteso Lombardo" the clerk specify that who will read the civil record, the written surname is Lombardo and it must be understood: Lombardo.

Re: Projetto ancestor
Hi Teresa, by this record
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... :976724588
why Achille Projetto becoming Achille Projetto Lomardo is a mystery..
abt
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1125441428
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1125441428
on Salvatore birth act the father was Gioacchino Lombardo; for some reason, Achille Projetto asked at Sciacca Court of to rectify the fatherhood of Salvatore Lombardo, and the jude on 27 apr 1892 ordered the amendment.. in 1892 the Achille surname was Projetto.. and not Achille Projetto Lombardo full name...
so I know not why on Ignazio Lombardo birth act, the father is Achille Projetto Lombardo... seeming a bit confused...
Salvatore Lombardo married under the name of Salvatore Projetto at Rosa Sancisi on 24 Feb 1900
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... :n56487130
and ditto on the marriage banner
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n500115694
maybe could be interesting to find the death act of Achille... if he died with Achille Projetto name or with Achille Projetto Lombardo.

Re: Projetto ancestor
I have yet to find any further documents on Achille Projetto, but I did find the death record of Margherita Sacco:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n682911073
And their daughter a few days earlier:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n682911073
In both records he is listed as Achille Lombardo.
Can someone tell me if the record gives an age for the child?
Are there any records online prior to 1861? How early were birth recorded in Southern Italy?
I'll keep looking for Achille's death record.

Re: Projetto ancestor
Thanks, Marty. I got her age and information (father was different on her marriage record than death record), but I wasn't sure about the baby. I thought maybe she died as a result of childbirth, but 9 months is a long time afterwards. They must have gotten sick.

Re: Projetto ancestor
And to add to this mess....here is the birth record of the baby:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1731443632
This lists her father as Gioacchino Lombardo. Apparently this guy (my gggrandfather) went back and forth between names. I am so confused!
