Zorbo

Post by sleone1981 »

This does not seem to be a very common surname....I was wondering if anyone could tell me where in Italy it is most common?

My great-great grandmother's name was Rosa Maria Zorbo. She married Augustino Cannizzaro, date unknown, place unknown. All records I have of her in the U.S. (only 3) list her name as Zorbo, never Cannizzaro, and Augustino is never with her. At first I thought she might have remarried, but I never find her with a new spouse and now that I know Italian women keep their maiden name, I believe Zorbo was hers. Augustino is said to have travelled back and forth quite a bit when my great-grandmother and her siblings were young and to have eventually died back in Italy, so I am not surprised to find no record of him in the USA.

It is possible that Rosa Maria was from Caltavuturo, but I have nothing definitive. I was hoping to find out more about the surname to help me in my search for her ancestry. All I do know is that she was born about 1867 in Italy, and died in 1941 in Brooklyn.

Maria Rosa ZORBA and Giuseppe Scaccia marriage:
Caltavuturo 21 May 1881 #18
Groom: Giuseppe Scaccia 36 old mason/blacksmith (?) born and resident in Caltavuturo, son of late Giuseppe Scaccia and of Orsola Renna

My doubt about this record was because it gave Gaetana Cannizzaro's age as 9 months. Really she would have been 9 years old at that time. However, the second Ellis Island record you found would seem to support the idea that "9 months" was an error in the first record.

I had also seen the 1940 census record of Maria Zorbo, and I could not figure out who Selina was. I thought I had the wrong record! But, it is entirely possible that Selina/Orsola was living with her uncle in 1900 because her mother, Rosa Zorbo, was travelling at the time with her second husband and infant, Gaetana Cannizzaro.

Would it be typical for a young child (Orsola) to be called by her mother's maiden name if her father was recently deceased? A remarriage sometime in the 1890's would explain why her first child (Orsola born 1885) was born Scaccia, then recorded in census as Zorbi/Zorbo; and her second child (Gaetana, b. 1898) went by her (living) father's name, "Cannizzaro" until she married.

This is marvelous!! I had many of these pieces, but had trouble putting them together in a way that made sense. Come to think of it, my grandfather had mentioned an aunt named "Celie" but I never found any further information about her. This must be Selina.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help.

Gaetana was 9 years old in the first ship manifest; just a error on the ship's manifest, because in this seond trip crossed of Mar 13, 1910
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0026
Gaetana was 11 years old.

I have no doubt that the records are abt your ancestor....
here Orsola marriage record:
Lunetta Santa Mar 23 1902 2119 (1902) Kings
Lascaccia Orsola Mar 23 1902 2119 (1902) Kings
(Really: Lunetta Santo-male-groom; Scaccia Orsola-female-bride)
so we know abt Rosa that married Giuseppe Scaccia and Orsola/Selina was born on 1885... maybe some other child also...
around 1892 or before Rosa and Orsola immigrated.. I no found a marriage in USA between Rosa and Augustine Cannizzaro.. maybe Rosa , becoming widow of Giuseppe Scaccia and remarried in Caltavuturo.. it is possible..

I searched these records from the beginning (1862) to 1870. (She would not likely be born any later, if she married in 1881 and had her first child in 1883.) No luck finding Rosa, although I did find a birth record of her sister, Calogera. Now I know there were at least three siblings.

It would seem that the USA records indicating a birth year of about 1865 were incorrect. Her marriage record indicated a birth year of 1861, so I have ordered that microfilm. Also hoping to find Augustino, perhaps he was born before 1862 as well.

The search continues!
