Cannarozza

Post by bailey539 »

Hi - looking for any information on this name and specifically these people:
Maria & Luigi Cannarozza
Luigi (b ~1868) and Maria (b. ~ 1877) - not sure when married, but arrived in New York CIty sometime before 1904. They lived on E 108th St in Manhattan at that time. Have no records of them after 1904, so possible they went back to Italy?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I do not know any children's names. What I do know from my grandmother's birth certificate is that they had 6 births of children (including my grandmother), of which only 1 was still living in 1904 besides my grandmother. At three weeks of age, my grandmother was brought by her mother, Maria, to the NY Foundling Hospital and given up. She was adopted by a lovely family who became my G-grandparents and loved and cared for their daughter (my grandmother).

So it is possible that they had a son, but I can't confirm that yet.

Found only one child born with surname CANNAROZZA in NYC between 1878 and 1909...
However, the name may have been misspelled on other birth records...

Could this be your grandmother?

Cannarozza Giovanna Jan 1 1904 Cert# 1759 Manhattan

You say that they were living on E. 108th St. in 1904 - did you get that address from your GM's birth record? or from a Census?

Here is the POSSIBLE listing of the above Giovanna in the 1905 NY Census as a resident [inmate] of the NY Foundling Hospital. Her surname appears to be spelled as Camorezza...
her age is listed as 1 year, born in US.

Hi, because Maria had many children and someone died I searched
with similar surname spelling the Death records (1892-1910):
Cannarozzi Anna 27 m Feb 1 1903 3543 (1903) Manhattan 1902 - 1903 1323017
Cannarozzi Pasquale 8 m Jul 15 1905 22793 (1905) Manhattan 1904 - 1905 1323092
Cannorozzi Pasquale 1 y Jan 28 1904 3425 (1904) Manhattan 1902 - 1903 1323039
Cannorrozzo Francesca 11 y Jan 14 1907 2076 (1907) Manhattan 1895 - 1896 1323141

ditto for Birth records:
Cannarozzi Pasqua Mar 23 1902 13920 (1902) Manhattan 1983597
Cannarrozzi Pasqu Oct 23 1904 48457 (1904) Manhattan 1984400
Cannaruzza Ancela Sep 21 1905 47847 (1905) Manhattan 1984760
Cannarozzi Vincen Apr 18 1907 22891 (1907) Manhattan 1991619
Cannaruzzo Maria Sep 5 1907 48584 (1907) Manhattan 1991804
Camarazzo Angiolo Jan 25 1908 9575 (1908) Manhattan 1991980

obviously your Giovanna Birth was already found by Tessa
I found also that the peoples with similar surname spelling living in Manhattan, coming from Pietramontecorvino and from Castrogiovanni( current Enna town)
I found a Maria Cannarozzo coming from Castrogiovanni, married at Eduardo Longi and they immigrated in USA in 1903, obviously is not your Maria, because we know no your Maria maiden name, but what it is interesting that this Longi family going to Fedele Gattieri friend living at 202 108th st Manhattan..
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0009
maybe also your ancestors coming from Castrogiovanni ..

Thank you all so much! Yes, Giovanna is my grandmother and I got the father's information as well as their address in Manhattan from the NY Birth Certificate. That is also her on the NY Foundling page; I had not found that one before. Her name was spelled a couple of different ways at the Foundling, but I have found that Cannarozza was the original and correct spelling, based on the birth certificate filed with NYC and the Admissions page of the Foundling Home. You have given me some new ideas to check into. Thanks!

Did the address on Giovanna's birth record have a house number?

Maybe we can search the census using the address...

I looked on the censuses, but was not able to find them. The address in 1904 was 221 E 108th Street.

Thank you. suanj. If family members have different spellings of the same name, where have you found that this occurs first - while still in Italy or once they reached Ellis Island (or other port)?

Generally the names were misspelled here on documents in the US. Given that the immigrants were mostly illiterate, and had an accent - there were clerks, census-takers, etc., who tried to spell what they heard.

The names on the ship manifest were taken from passports, emigration documents, so were correctly spelled... HOWEVER, they are often transcribed incorrectly by those who are entering the names into a database...

The surname of a passenger was wrote right in Italy... the errors was by handwriting of ship's manifest by compiler ( what he read.. maybe a "u" becoming a "n" and "nn" becoming "m" or me/mi" etc.. the "zz" maybe was read as "gg" etc) and if we add that the ship's manifest are transcribed, other errors are on the databases, because who transcribed, it transcribed what he read, but no much familiar with italian surnames or old handwriting....

However the italians, also if illitterates, preserved the own italian passport where the surname was wrote right... and when they registered a birth I believe that always provided the right surname spelling... the problems in the databases are abt the transcription, for that is a bit hard, sometimes, to find right records, especially when a surname is a bit long and so some error is possible.. I believe right spelling Cannarozzo... just my opinion....
I cannot find no a entry abt a Luigi Cannarozzo/a born abt in 1868.. maybe Luigi was no his full first name... and used just Luigi in USA...

also it is possible that on the 1905 NY census Luigi provided a anglicized surname... because I don't think that a italian mother, after that her many children was decesead, and put a daughter in a foudling hospital, well I believe that in 1905 Maria was in Manhattan, just for to see own daughter, until the child was adopted.... maybe Luigi died in 1904 and Maria remarried... who know... just 1 thing is sure: by surname ( in all versions) the family is not on 1905 NY census....
best regards,
suanj

Thank you! Does anyone know of Italian surname sites that people can post directly to a name for others with that same name? I have seen a couple for Irish surnames.
