1900 Census

http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/8434/gamb19009ud.gif

Joseph Gambino found in:
Census Microfilm Records: Pennsylvania, 1900
Lived in:  South Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania
do you have access to the 1900 census records for Connellsville, Fayette, Pennsylvania? I think that's where Joseph E and Ulelia (Lelia) Gambino lived at the time
They're there! Your info was great... found this 1900 census quickly.

Imm. 1880

Children... Joseph, Willie, Frank, and the youngest son?? Can't make out his name... He doesn't show up on the 1910 Census, but Cammie the daughter does...

And ... now we have 4 immigration dates...

1870...1873...1880.....1882...

edited... 1880... as per 1900 census... :?

Wow, I thought Frank was the youngest son....Cammie Alice is the next sibling in line, and she's 3 years younger than Frank. I've emailed Aunt Cammie (Frank's daughter) to see if she knows anything about this.

I can't understand why someone would list a different immigration year for each census (I can't believe there's 4!!!). I'll post any information I find out. Are there any records I could find from the port of Naples for departures? I'm not sure where to look next. :?

Thank you for the 1900 census!!!

Well... I guess finding an 1880 census record would probably help.

Your could search here ... for boat info...

Castle Garden data only search site...
http://www.castlegarden.org/
------------------------------------
Or here... once again data only... you would have to register (free)
http://213.212.128.168/radici/ie/defaultie.htm

"It contains the files on about 200,000 Italian emigrants recorded in the Ship Passenger Lists who arrived in New York between 1880 and 1891."
-------------------------------------
www.stevemorse.org
----------------------------------------
And through Ancestry.com... paid subscription site...

I will do a search later this evening using Ancestry.com ... and if someone can find a ships record sooner or the 1880 census, that would really be nice... even 1890 if it does exist...

If you come across a person of interest... just post them here and I will see if I can find a "viewable" file...

So Giuseppe (Guiseppe) Gambino ... year of birth 1863-1864, immigration years 1870...1873...1880.....1882...

The 1900 census has his birth year as 1867....if this is true, then the immigration date of 1880 would be the closest one. Aunt Cammie said he immigrated when he was 12. I've looked on all the sites for immigration records, but nothing! This is a very elusive man. Not one for correct dates! I will order the vital records for Fayette county at the LDS center tomorrow. There is an aliens' record for 1802-1906 that exists.

P.S. - I mentioned the whole "renew our vows in Italy" to my hubby, and he's totally up for that! We may even have our two daughters as our flower girls. It would be awesome if I found out where his gg-grandparents were married in Fontanarosa!

Just a thought here. If he immigrated at the age of 12 perhaps he traveled with his mother. Often the husband came first and then sent for the wife and kids. Women traveled under their maiden names. Children should be listed with the husbands surname,...but sometimes they are listed with the surname of the mother. I have seen manifests where the name was corrected, but some were probably not caught. Some children are listed with a surname of figlio or figlia. Just some suggestions if you have trouble finding a passenger record. Good luck with your search. It took me over a year to find one elusive family!

Keep thinking about that trip to Italy. I leave Friday for Sicily and also plan to visit an ancestral village.

As far as I know, Joseph's father, Francesco, was leaving for North America, and 12-year-old Joseph begged to go with him. His mother stayed behind, and Joseph and his dad ended up in the U.S. working on the railroads (not clear if it was in Pennsylvania or some other state). His father died, and Joseph never found out where his father was buried. I'm not sure if, at that point, he was young enough to be considered an orphan. I've looked for records for both, but nothing yet. I'll update as I find out more info.
Thanks for your input! Good luck on your trip this week! How exciting!

I believe that Aunt Cammie is reading these posts. Here's the email she sent me with new information:

I found Grandpa Joseph's birth date: 1863. He died in 1953. If he left Italy when he was 12, the year would have been 1975. But 1873 sure is close, so maybe he really was only 10! I also found his brothers' and sisters' names: Charles, Mary, and Philomena (or Filomena). I also found information that says Joseph's father died when Joseph was 15. It also says that Charles also came here at some point. (Oh, no! Don't tell me we really do have an Uncle Carlo!" ;-D

I'll repost when I get new information. I'm going to order those Pennsyvania records tonight, and I really hope that helps!

Thank you, mfjp!

I believe everything you listed is about correct, but here's the correct children information that I've gathered:

Joseph b1893 Maryland,
William b1895 Maryland,
Frank Alva Gambino, in Connellsville, PA, in 1898
Unknown son "C" (?) b. Nov. 1899 (they had Frank's off by one year in the 1900 census, so I'm assuming it's the same for this one) Pennsylvania
Cammie Alice b1902 Pennsylvania
Mae Adeline b1904 West Virginia
Ethel Louise b1913 West Virginia
Maria b1912 West Virginia

You've been a great help! I sincerely appreciated it!!! I'm going to try to find out if Joseph and Lelia got married in Maryland. I'll post any new information I find out.
