It has been 7 years since I posted. I have since found Passenger list papers for Luigi Davito Gara who followed my grandfather from Italy. In Turin, my grandfather was orphaned and went to live with the Davito Gara family. My grandfather spoke no English and could not read or write. I need to find his Italian name. How should I go about finding him in the Davito Gara household?

Below are my grandfathers Alabama marriage license with what I gather is the closest thing to his Italian name but remember he could not read or write so it was written by the court clerk so that person did the best they could with a foreign name. Also below is the passengers list for Luigi who my grandfather lived with and considered Luigi his nephew in Italy. Luigi later married my grandfathers oldest daughter.

the cousin seeming had Stefano first name and not Stefano surname, but is unreadable and maybe my idea can be wrong... instead on the marriage records the surname seeming as a italian Stefano/Stefani/Di Stefano or so... and also a bit similar on 1920 census, if

Yes that is my grandfather in the census. Coal miners could not say his Italian name so they called him Joe Sefeno or Steve Concord. He went by Joe Sefeno until later in his life he changed the name back to Steve Concord. Very frustrating. So many years of searching.

I believe that from this census we can read the infos more true
on marriage record the same seeming Concord Stevens.. but seeming to me that is inverted: the surname with first name..

after that I read these 2 other censuses, I believe that he was born also before of 1867 or 1865...

Nobody can be sure abt Serafino Concordia... if he is your ancestor or not...
for bad luck the basic data- for a search- are wrong or misspelled...
the name is very important... but it is hard to know the right spelling... on Luigi Davito Gara ship's manifest I read that he joining at cousin ...ffino Stefano... instead in 1910 census Luigi is a nephew and not a cousin...
so maybe better to search better in USA, to collect all possible infos just for to know more and to search better in italian records....

I found something else that might be a piece of the puzzle. I've tried searching this ship at Havre near this year and I'm not having much luck. I do find a ship called Le Bartange.. I'm wondering if that's the correct one. I do believe he is not Serafino due to port of departure. He states in declaration of intent that departure wad Havre...Luigi also departed Havre...makes sense. So my search continues.
