Lost in Italy

Post by cuppare »

I'm getting confused with Italian towns, etc.

I found a ship manifest at the Ellis Island web site which may match my husband's grandmother traveling to America in 1910. The port of departure was Naples, and grandmother's place of residence on the manifest is "S. Agata, Italy". Family history states she was from Reggio Calabria, Italy. Is S. Agata (?Saint Agata?) a town in Reggio Calabria? I can't quite figure it out from the maps I looked at online.

Thank you! The city of Sant'Agata di Esaro is in the Calabria region.

So as an example, is a region like a county or state/commonwealth in the USA?

If I want to request information on her, would I send a request to the city?

Why can't I find the city of Sant'Agata di Esaro when I go to the map of Reggio di Calabria?

Hi Cuppare,

Maria has given you some useful links.

Italy is divided into various regions. Calabria is a region and Sicily is a region just to name 2 of the regions.

Each region is divided into provinces. Calabria currently has 5 provinces. Reggio Calabria is one of them.

Each province is divided into comunes or towns.

In Italy all vital records are kept in the town where the event occured. There is no central govenmental registry or even central provicial registries. That is why it is necessary to identify the correct town or comune to locate an ancestors birth, or marriage record.

This is how I would explain them in terms of USA definitions:
Region = State
Province = County
Comune = Town

Hope this helps.

Darn it - I'm lost again.

I went to the LDS online catalog so I could order microfilm when I go to the FHC tomorrow. I typed in "Sant'Agata di Esaro, Italy".

What I got was: Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910; Sant'Agata di Esaro (Cosenza).

I checked a map and Cosenza is a diferent province than Reggio Calabria (which is where I need to look).

Suggestions on how to locate records for Sant'Agata di Esaro, Reggio Calabria?

Thanks,
cuppare

It was the manifest for Duca d'Aosta sailing from Naples: line 1, Paola Tellarida and her 3 daughters. Please let me know if you think it's a different town.

Your list is the same one I found at the online LDS card catalog. I used the city suggested in answer to my query "City of Sant'Agata di Esaro: Calabria Region".

I'm going to check these links and also see if I can get a listing for City of Sant'Agata del Bianco, Reggio Calabria at the LDS card catalog.

Thanks,
cuppare
