Confused by multiple Pubblicazioni di Matrrimonio

Post by tmroz »

I am not of Italian heritage but have begun to do some genealogy research for my future daughter-in-law who is. As such, I've spent some number of hours researching some of the Messina civil records hosted by familysearch. They are easier to follow than Polish records that I'm used to researching but I're run across one confusing situation dealing with marriage records.
I'm following the family name of Delnostro. This first record is what thought to be their marriage record but I now think is showing the marriage banns in January 1880
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,179105301

I now think that they were not married then. This record shows a child (Filippo) being born 23 Jan 1880 and I believe it shays that the mother in still unmarried.

Then in Sep 1881, there are marriage banns again being published for the parents
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,179137001

Am I correct in the assumption that while marriage banns were published in 1880, they really didn't get married until the 2nd set of banns were published in 1881? I also see that the groom's parents names were unknown so that's another mystery. Just confusing.

Yeah, that's what happened. They were probably rushing to get married before she gave birth, but they ran out of time. The last date of publication of the banns in Jan 1880 was 22 Jan, but she gave birth on the 23rd. Whoops! After that I guess there was no reason to hurry anymore.

Why don't you look for the marriage act? It should be in the 1881 marriages, or maybe 1882 if they waited a while after publishing the banns in Sep 1881. I note that the marriage acts are available online for that period. Marriage publications, which is what you're using, don't actually record when, or even if, 2 people really got married.

It wasn't unusual for children to be abandoned at birth. Unfortunately, you'll probably never be able to figure out who his parents were.

There is a good possibility that the couple was married in the church prior to the birth of their first child.
I would check the church records ...

Some information about marriages:
After 1809 Napoleonic law required that the marriage ceremony be performed first by a civil authority and then, if desired, by a church authority. It was then recorded in the civil records. At first, some people resisted this law and had their marriages performed by church authority only. Later when it became legally necessary for their children to be recognized as legitimate, a civil ceremony was performed. In rare cases, you may find a marriage record for a couple in their 50s who were actually married 30 years earlier. In most cases you may find marriages recorded in both civil and church records.

Thank you, so much to the replies on this confusing marriage sequence. Like I said, I'm new to researching Italian records but I find them reasonably easy to translate and it's fortunate that so many civil records are online. It would be nice if church records were too, but not that I've found. This is a really helpful forum.

Thanks again,
Tom

You may wish to write to the parish priest to request the marriage record.
There are two listings for parishes in San Filippo del Mela in the Italian Phone Book.
You may wish to write to the Parish of S. Filippo and Giacomo.
