Looking for Giansante Family in Abruzzo

Post by RobRice »

HI, I am looking for family that my Great grandfather left behind when he emigrated.
Berardino Giansante married Maria Croce GianDomenico
their sons Antonio and Pietro had children who emigrated to US.
Antonio married Constanza DiMarzio in 1881
Pietro married Caterina Broggini
Antonio and Constanza had son Bernardino b. 1891 who emigrated in 1909
and daughter Maria who stayed in Abruzzo.
Pietro had at least one son Pietro who emigrated to US prior to 1909.
that's all the Italian side of this family I have, maybe someone else knows more?
thank you
Saluti,
Rob Rice

Hi Rob,

You did not mention which town from the Abruzzo region they were from... as we would need to zero in on his birth town...

The manifest of a Berardino (linked below) states that he was from Sasso(a)...

There is a town called Sassa.. located in the North Western region in Italy. I cannot make out the town mentioned on this WW1 Registration record....

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

City: Not Stated
County: Knox
State: Ohio
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 28 Jul 1891

Benardino's WW1 record

Town from Italy is ???? Could he have meant "Foce" di Sassa

Thank you, the town was new information. I've been quite curious about his city of origin, it was listed simply as Sasso, and I could not find any such town. This may help find other relatives.
Any other Giansantes from Abruzzo?

First Name: Petro
Last Name: Ghiansante (as transcribed)
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence: Sassa, Italy
Date of Arrival: Aug 03, 1907
Age at Arrival: 20y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: La Lorraine
Port of Departure: Le Havre
Manifest Line Number: 0006

Pietro page 1

Pietro Page 2

The manifest says that he is off to cousin Paolino's in PA. This record also mentions that his father is Berardino in Sassa.

To Recap.. (just a small few.. all from Sassa)...

Pietro Giansante born 1887 (who's father is Berardino) going to cousin Paolo.
Germano Giansante born 1891 (who's father is Berardino) going to brother Pietro.
Berardino Giansante born 1891 (who's father is Antonio) going to cousin Pietro.

There are many Giansante's scattered throughout the Abruzzi region... Sassa as birthtown is still in doubt though..

Please clarify...
Pietro had at least one son Pietro who emigrated to US prior to 1909.
Is this correct?

Can you mention where they settled in the USA?

Hi: Sassa is a hamleth of L'AQUILA town, so for all civil records is necessary to write:

Servizi demografici
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via Roma, 207 A
67100 L'Aquila (AQ)
Italy

regards, suanj

Great! Thank you.

Though town is not confirmed... Sassa Civil records can be researched from a Family History Center near you...

Thank you all so much. I believe Pietro had a son of the same name, but I may be mistaken. I will attempt to find civil records from the addresses you all have provided. Can you tell me how far back civil records go?

A death record of 1809 could easily take you back to early 1700's...

Hi! I'm writing from Foce di Sassa, a small town (about 300 inhabitants) near L'Aquila (Abruzzo), a city near Rome.
In Foce di Sassa live the Giansante family (Antonio Giansante, Pietro Giansante, Berardo Giansante), probably your relatives.
If you want, I can give you more informations.
Bye... :)

Caste8591!!! Yes!!! I'm sorry I have not been checking the forum for quite some time, I assumed no additional help was forthcoming. If you could help me contact the Giansantes in Foce di Sassa, I would be very grateful. My Italian suffers from lack of use, and I may not be very good at communicating, but I sure want to try! my e-mail should be current soon, you can contact me directly. Thank you for your offer, and I hope to hear from you soon! 8O

There are about 19 Giansante in l"aquila and one is Piero (Italian version Pietro=Peter) who may possibly be related to you. Go to www.paginebianche.it and put in Giansante in the first line and in the second opening put in Piero and then below put in l'Aquila and click CERCA for his full name, address and telephone number. If you wish to send him a potential relative letter then go to www.mangeruca.com for a form letter in Italian as a potential relative. =Peter=
