Help reading marriage certificate

Post by amarino81 »

Hi everyone,

I mailed away to NYC for my ancestor's marriage certificate. I am having a hard time reading the first name of the groom's father and the last name of the groom's mother.

I believe the groom's father might read Savino, Lavino or Sabino (in the next generations the american name Samuel was given).
The groom's mother, I originally though was Maddalena Russo. But it appears to read Sorge.
Is anyone able to make out what they say? I apologize for the light scans.

My ultimate goal is to send away for their marriage records in Italy. I believe they are from Teggiano.

Thanks for the help!

Anthony

I am reading the groom's parents to be Sabino Morena and Maddalena Sorge.

Edit: It's more likely to be Maddalena Sorze. Another pair of eyes might help determine.

I read the groom's name as Paolo Morena. His age appears to be 27. His residence is 225 North 7th St.
Groom's father is Sabino Morena.
Groom's mother's maiden name is Maddalena Sorge.
It appears this is the groom's second marriage.
Occupation: Laborer

The Bride's name appears to be Catarina Babboni. She is in her teens.
Residence: North 9th?
This is the bride's first marriage.
I'm having difficulty reading her parents names.

Anthony,

How long did it take for you to receive this marriage record from NYC? I've been waiting a few weeks for one myself.

You may find the marriage record here:

The bride looks like she was 16. I am reading Francesco for her father's first name and the name Maddalena Caselle for her mother. It would help to know where in Italy these people were from.

Yes, Steve, I saw that, but I just looked at the lista di leva, military records, for Teggiano and all of Salerno province and neither Paolo or his father are there, with the surname spelled Morena or Moreno.

Catarina's surname varies in spelling in the U.S. births of their children. I see the surname spelled as Babino, Babnio, and Babbina. I can't find a spelling in those military records either. I tried to find her father, or a male sibling.

I found these in the lista di leva from the Salerno archive. The second one could be a real possibility. The town of Diano should be Vallo di Diano, or Valdiano, in the Province of Salerno.

Possibly a sibling of Catarina. If so, then Babino would be the correct spelling of her surname.

Thanks for helping. I submitted a request for 8 or so documents about 6 weeks ago. I received a failure to find information letter on 1 of the requests a week ago and 2 marriage certificates yesterday. I knew the certificate numbers for the requests I received. I have 5 outstanding.

This info may match up. I believe Teggiano is inside Valdiano. Teggiano is based on shared Morena and Cassela results from ancestry DNA. Long story short, My last name is Marino as well as the rest of my known family. I found out through DNA a couple of months ago that the surname was changed a few times. This opened new lines of information.

Savino was the original name I had for "Sabino"/"Samuel". I have his year of birth down as 1844 but this is strictly from census information in his later yrs.
