Chiodo Family from Cotronei, Italy

Post by 3Tracer »

I am beginning my search for my family history. I thought that I would start here and maybe get some help.

I do know a few bits of info.

Grandfather: Ernesto Chiodo came over to Ellis Island 1913 at age 9 with mother and 2 sisters from Cotronei, Calabria, Italy.

Mother: Caterina Capilluto Chiodo married to Ferdinado Chiodo
Fedinando died young, I think prior to 1913.
Ferdinando's parents: Luigi Chiodo and Fortunato (surname unknown)
Caterina's parents were: Gaetano ? (surname unknown) and Filomeno Passafa

I would like to get some more solid info regarding family from Caterina and Ferdinado Chiodo and back. Info like when Ferdinando died, who else was in the family, etc. Some solid family history.

Can someone please guide me or help me with this?

Hi there,

I have to ask, where did your Ernesto settle in the USA?

The Family History Center does have microfilm for the town of Cotronei. It costs $5.75 a roll to order and rent it. Here is the link for the film numbers.

Here is the link to find the nearest Family History Center

On the microfilm you can find copies of the Birth, Marriage, and Death Acts of your ancestors.

Here is the 1913 manifest that you mention of Ernesto coming into the USA with his mother and siblings. They were going to his brother, Luigi in Wisconsin. Also, per the manifest, it states Caterina (the mother) is a widow.

I hope this helps for now, still checking a few things.

Ernesto (Ernest) settled in Kenosha, WI. That is my grandfather.

I have the copy of that ships manifest that you are refering to. However, I did not notice that it did say Caterina was a widow at that time. One sister Anna Maria settled in PA, Filomeno went back to Italy.

WOW you have been a great help already, helping me to better understand this manifest. I only have page 1 in my posession. And I have for some glitch only been able to read page 2 online, which I did not fully understatnd. It does appear that Luigi is the son of Caterina! This is getting really exiting!

Thanks for your efforts!

Hi There,

I've been having a trouble all night with Ellis Island. Try viewing the 2nd page at a later time.

Also, who did Ernesto marry? I think I found Ernesto in the 1930 Census married to Martha. Is this your Ernesto?

Name: Ernest Chislo
(Ernest Chiodo - if you zoom in on census it looks like Chiodo)
Age: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1902
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's Name: Martha Chislo
Race: White
Home in 1930: Kenosha, Kenosha, Wisconsin
Image source: Year: 1930; Census Place: Kenosha, Kenosha, Wisconsin; Roll: 2577; Page: 12B; Enumeration District: 24; Image: 971.0

I hope I'm right, however, only you can confirm if it's him.
