Grieco-Griesi

Post by marins »

Hi everybody! I am an Italian teacher living for a while in the States, my maternal grandmother's brother came to the States in 1911 at the age of 18 from Palazzo San Gervasio (Potenza), Basilicata whereas my grandfather (Donato Grieco) arrived in 1909 at the age of 20 from Palazzo San Gervasio (Potenza), Basilicata...any suggestions? I do not know from where I should start...they never came back. Grazie a tutti per l'aiuto...

Hi again,

If that Donato mentioned above is your Donato, then this is his WWI Draft Card. However, we need proof from you as to what his wife's name is, his childrens' names, where they settled, and anything that could help us find your ancestors.

Name: Viti Donati Grieco

State: Connecticut
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 5 Mar 1889
Race: Caucasian
Roll: 1570497

Hope this helps,

Hi Again,

I know my post seems confusing, but for some reason the whole post did not upload. Here it is again.

If you read the ship's manifest of your Donato, he left his Father, Vincenzo back in Italy. It was listed on Page 1 of the manifes.

Click here for Page 1 of the Manifest

Then I stated, this could be your Donato in the SSDI

Since your Donato was born about 1889, this could be him in the SSDI.

Name: Donato Grieco
SSN: 043-09-4904
Last Residence: 06790 Torrington, Litchfield, Connecticut, United States of America
Born: 5 Mar 1889
Died: May 1969
State (Year) SSN issued: Connecticut (Before 1951 )

I posted his WWI Draft Card in the other post.

And the Family History Center has microfilm that you can order and rent for $5.75 a roll. However, the film is limited from 1809-1860. Here is the link for the film numbers

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50

Here is the link to find the nearest Family History Center
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... t_fhlc.asp

Here is the address in case you want to write for any documents after 1860.

Ufficio Civile Stato
Comune di Palazzo San Gervasio
Xxv Luglio Snc (via)
85026 Palazzo San Gervasio PZ

I hope this helps.

You are from Italy and in the USA.........Do you seek USA records, or records from Italy?

Are you hoping to locate family here in the US, descendants of your
Grandfather and Uncle?

Thank you very much! as far as I am concerned my greatgrandfather's wife name was Filomena and they had two children, my grandfather Grieco Domenico and Michele Grieco. Anyway, he is the only Grieco Donato that left Palazzo San Gervasio...any descendants in the USA?

Hi Again,

We are happy to help you try to locate information about your Donato. However, we need to know some more information from you.

What is Filomena's maiden name?
Do you know the year of birth for Michele or Domenico?
Do you know where the family settled?

Any clues will help us locate them in the census.

Please get back to us.

Hello Marins,
Then I was correct, you are hoping to meet with family....
I think it is wonderful for you to have a chance to meet with your family while you are here in the US.. :D

But we need to get to work since you are returning to Italy in May,
as Trish stated, we need all info you have on US family so that we may locate descendants.

Hi Wldspirit,

I was able to previous post the first page of the manifest.

Donato left his father, Vincenzo behind in Italy.

Page 1 of 1909 Manifest

Due to Donato's age, I was finding some clues such as the one in Connecticut that I posted. However, if you do a soundex, several Donato's come up, mostly with the spelling of Greco.

Plus, if we had some birth years for the sons, this could help more find clues.

I do hope the postee gets back to us.

Hi everybody!
I really appreciate your help and maybe by the end of may I will be able to go back to Italy. As far as I know, my grandfather was born in 1903 and the Donato Grieco that appears on the manifest, that is to say, the one that arrived in the States in 1909 and came from Palazzo san Gervasio is the one. It is said that he came to join Saluzzi or Saluzzo and that's correct! any suggestion for proceeding? thanks a lot!!! do you all speak any Italian?

I have not been able to discover further info on Donato Grieco.
I would suggest sending for the death certificate in hopes that it may provide additional info to go on, you have the basic info needed for a request using the information above. See site below for request,

http://www.dph.state.ct.us/PB/HISR/Vital_Records.htm

At this point, you could call or write to persons with the Grieco surname living in Torrington, Connecticut, you may or may not discover a descendant.
