Sariceno somewhere in Naples

Post by seajones »

My great grandfather Frank Sariceno came to America in 1892 from Italy. I can't find the Sariceno name anywhere outside the USA. I am trying to find the Italian home town of the Sariceno family so my mother can visit when she goes to Italy in October 2006. I was wondering if the name spelling changed when he came to America. I need some help with this. He is in US census recods beginning in 1910 along with his family members. As far as my family knows he came from somewhere in Naples. He was born in 1870. Is there any way to research this family name on an Italian web site? There where plenty of Saraceno immigrants but I can't match them with his info either. I am trying to start a family tree with this information. I would appreciate any help or ideas anyone may have.

Hi both,

If Francesco immigrated in 1892 he would have been around the age of 22 ... was he married then... ?

Having done a quick search... here are some close matches... but the year of immigration is 1910 and 1913...

Saraceno,Francesco Cortale, Italy immigration1910 @ age 42 year of birth1868
Saraceno,Francesco Lentini, Italy immigration 1913 @ age 40 year of birth 1873...

You may have to provide more detail...

Siblings? name of spouse, children (we can look up other census records) ??... more info about where he settled... etc...

This can be researched on the internet, but having a subscription to Ancestry.com would really help...

There are a few that subscribe, and it is obvious here at this forum that there will be help for you locating documents... we've got a great team here.

Juanminbar :P gave you a good head start...

So... give us more details...

Hello seajones,
I found this ship record. Is it your ancestor?

Francesco Saraceno
Occupation None
Age 14
Sex M
Literacy U
Arrived 14 Sep 1891
Origin Italy
Port Marseilles & Naples
Last Residence Unknown
Destination 49-front-st-brook.ny
Plan Unknown
Ship Cheribon
Passage Unknown

You say that on the census he declares to be born on 1870, here he seems to be born on 1877. Sometimes infos don't match.
I suggest you to check on his naturalization papers (if any) because there you find his right date and place of birth.
Otherwise look for infos on marriage application, marriage act, death record and cemetery record.
I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

seajones,

You have 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 US Census?
Frank & Mary SARICENO immig 1892 living in Boston in 1920?
Children born in US?

After 1906, Ship Manifests lists the place of birth.

If this is the family in Boston, there may not be an easy way to find
the correct town in Italy (unless they went back for a visit)

May have to get creative - check manifests for the name SARICENO (and sound-alike variations) for common location in Italy. Brothers, sisters in US? Anyone from the family in Italy come for a visit?

What do you think? vj

But luckily the manifests do have an important section such as section 9 which lists last residence which in many cases.. is the place of birth... so there is hope!

JUAN

I considered the name change possibilty and did find some close mathes with the saraceno spelling. I'll ask family members about more specifics. A member is checking some trade journals from the early 1900's and let me know what he finds.

Thanks for your help

I have found the family in US Census documents for 1910, 1920, 1930 with Frank as head Mary as wife children listed as James, Dominic, Joseph, Jennie and Frank Jr. A friend I spoke with last night from Sicily suggested that perhaps all the Sariceno's left Italy and there aren't any more there with the same spelling. It's just odd that there are no Sariceno's at all in any database to be found. There are plenty of Sariceno's here in Massachusetts. The oldest living Sariceno in the US is 70 years old but knows nothing about the family from Italy.

Thanks for your help

The Sariceno family is from Boston and yes it seems to be difficult but worth it of course. I have found the family in US census records from the early 1900's but thats as far back as I've gotten. I continue my struggle so thanks for your help.
