Sabato Amato

Post by barruzza »

Im looking for information on My Grandfather.
His name was Sabato Amato and he was born in
San Vitaliano near Naples. He came to America
on April 25, 1912. I think he was born in 1896.
On the ships manifest he lists his father's name
as Mariano. Im looking for his siblings and parents
names. Or any other information about him.
Also, I have another Grandfather (still living at 95)
He is from Sicily and was in the war. I was wondering
the best way to find out about his army career. His
name is Salvatore Barruzza and he spent time in a German
work camp in newenburg?

You will need to write to the town of origin for records as the Lds only has filmed records available for this location up to 1860........

have you obtained all US records?

Do you know where he lived in the US? If you can provide this information, we maybe able to obtain other records (census, military, death info) for you if you do not have them already.

Hi there,

Here is the manifest that you mention above about Sabato Amato. Per this manifest, he is going to go see his brother, Antonio in Chicago, Illinois. Sabato did leave his father, Mariano in Italy. And Sabato was born in San Vitaliano.

Here are other Amanto people coming to the USA from San Vitaliano through Ellis Island. There could be others that also came to the USA.

Amato,Michele S. Vitaliano, Italy 1907 19 1888
Amato,Raffaele S. Vitaliano 1901 22 1879
Amato,Sabato S. Vitaliano, Italy 1912 16 1896
Amato,Saverio S. Vitaliano, Italy 1907 17 1890
Amato,Vincenzo S. Vitaliano, Italy 1907 21 1886
Amato Stella,Stella S. Vitaliano, Italy 1920 18 1902

The Family History Center does have microfilm that you can order and rent for $5.75 a roll, but the film is limited from 1809-1865. Here is the link for the film numbers.

For any record after 1865, you will have to write to the town itself. Here is the address.

Ufficio Stato Civile
Comune di San Vitaliano
Piazza Leonardo da Vinci
80030 San Vitaliano NA
ITALY

Here is a link that will help you translate your letter into Italian.

Here is the town's official website.

I hope this helps,
