Caivano Family

Is there anybody out there who has information on my grandfather ,Francesco Caivano ,and his family. He lived with us all of his life so I know that he was born in 1889 and came to the USA in about 1907.His father was Guiseppe Caivano and his mother Rosa Simone Caivano. He had a brother Luigi, born about 1898 who served in the Italian army and also came to the USA,as well as a sister Pasqualina who remained in Italy.Cousins,who I met in Italy in 1983 still live in Pontelatone and Formicola

What is it that you wanted to know? Where in the US did he reside? It would be better if you were a bit more specific in terms f your research goals. What was his spouse's name? I have found a few Frank's but the years of birth are off....need more info from you.

Thanks, Nuccia. I am new to the site and your recommendation is appreciated. The short answer is I am interested in anything and everything I can learn about my grandfather's (and my) family.Who were his g grandparents etc .I know for example a Genaro Caivano was mayor of Pontelatone in 1844.As to facts about his time in the USA here are a few.:

He was married to Carolina DeGregorio who was born in 1884 to Guiseppe De Gregorio of San Angelo en Formis. Both spent their very first years in America in Sarotoga Springs NY.Very shortly,however they moved to Kingston NY where they lived until both passed.They had two children,my father Joseph SR and my Aunt Rose . Both are now deceased. I hope yhis additional info helps and thanks again for your interest in my research.

Since you know the town of origin, you can send for a "stato di famiglia originario", it is kept at the ufficio di stato civile, it documents not those present in a household at a given time, but all members of the family, past and present, including those who moved away or died.

Thanks,wldspirit.Pardon the ignorance of a novice, but may I assume that a letter sent to "Ufficio...." at the address for the village will be sufficient.Also any other recommendations? Should I include that I would be glad to pay or should I wait for them to mention the cost when they write back to me. Anything else about the actual letter that you think I should know like is there a best way to sent the letter (Air mail etc) .I also assume that I should write in Italian(the most beautiful of all languages!)

Let's start off with the Family History Center does have microfilm that you can order and rent for about $5.75 a roll. On the film you can find copies of the Birth, Marriage, and Death Acts of your ancestors.

Now VJ gave you the information from the 1920 census. (good work VJ) Which has some good clues on it. Per this census, both Francesco and Carolina came in 1907. Francesco was Naturalized by 1917. I'm sure someone will post the 1920 census for you.

Thanks to all who responded .The info was very helpful and I shall surely use it.However, I believe I may have not been precise enough in spelling out my requests.My grandpa lived with us all of his life so I know almost everything about him including his first job in the kingston area.I also have searched the Stato CIVILE at the LDS here in my city and have traced his line back to 1803.I really am interested in family history prior to 1803 and any personal knowledge of him or any of his family while they lived in Italy.Where did they come from before Pontelatone. I am fairly sure they spent time in the village of Caivano from which we got our name and which is located about 40 miles from Pontelatone and 9 miles from Naples.I once visited cousins in Pontelatone (1983) and learned some wonderful stories.

Finally, while in Italy last year 3 different curators assumed I was Jewish when they heard my family was from Caivano. I am fascinated by this and wonder if anybody knows why Caivano specifically is assosciated with a Jewish history.

Again thanks to all and pardon my lack of brevity as I am very enthused about this project.

Once you have exhausted microfilmed records, it will be neccesary to consult parish records, some of which go back to the 1400 and 1500's......
this means writing to the parish priest.......some are more helpful than others.........if after a few attempts you recieve no answer, ask the parish priest if perhaps he "knows of someone who could consult these records for you at your expense, perhaps a nephew"? And thank him profusely!!


An excellent book with regard to tracing Italian ancestors:
"Italian Genealogical Records"
by Trafford R. Cole....this is a fast, easy read..... without all the fluff.....
it gives a complete outline of all records to be had, including Jewish records.
The book tells you where to write and to whom, by the time you are done,
you will be a Master Genealogist........
