Re. il Feudo

Post by joetucciarone »

Does anyone know what the label, "Re. il Feudo," means in the center of the following two maps?

The maps were made in 1862-1876 and the labels are located about six miles apart in the mountains of the Province of L'Aquila. If "Re." is the abbreviation for "regione," then does "Re. il Feudo" mean the region of the fiefdom? The following article in the Los Angeles Times said feudalism was ended in Italy in 1806:

If that's true, why would the map-makers include feudal designations more than 50 years after the system was abolished?

I've seen the word used in documents in Sicily in the 1810s.

Feudalism was over, but maybe names remained for a long time.
