CARACAPPA - SANCLIMENTI from Calatafimi, Sicily

Post by mjones »

Antonina Caracappa (b) Abt 1874 Emigrated to US 1905
Gaspar Sanclimenti (b) Abt 1864 Emigrated to US 1904

I have ships manifests that indicate these two were married and both list their last place of residence as Calatafimi, Sicily.

My question is simple: How do I verify place of birth before requesting Birth Certificates? Is LDS film the only way? or is there anything at all online for Italian Vitals?

Thanks,
Mary

Hi There,

I checked the microfilm that the Family History Center has to offer. The Civil Records are incomplete, but there are Church Records available. The film costs $5.75 a roll.

Here is the link for the film numbers.

I think your best bet is to write directly to the town for the records. Here is the address for the town.

Ufficio Stato Civile
Comune di Calatafimi TP
Piazza Francesco Cangemi, 1
91013 Calatafimi
ITALY

Here is the official website for the town.

Here is a link from ICC that will help you translate your letter into Italian.

I hope this helps some.

Hello Mary,
as you can see, the only birth records avalaible from Calatafimi are those ones of 1912, 1920 and 1926. Just 3 years!!!
So it is better if you contact directly the civil record office of Calatafimi, hoping they have more years of records.

Riccardo, researching from Baptismal records not a good idea?

Just wondering...

Wouldn't Baptismal records be "almost" as good as Civil Birth Records to research from?

The baptismal records are available for many many years ....

Registri ecclesiastici, 1534-1910 Chiesa cattolica. (Catholic Church) San Silvestro Papa (Calatafimi, Trapani)

Registri ecclesiastici, 1619-1910 Chiesa cattolica. (Catholic Church) San Giuliano Martire (Calatafimi, Trapani)

Trapani, Calatafimi - Census
Calatafimi (Trapani), 1593-1815 Sicilia.

This seems like a wonderful collection to research from...

Hi Mary,

Now per the ship's manifest for Antonina. It stated she was naturalized. I already posted her naturalization information, but I'll post it again for you.

Here is the link to download the form to send for her naturalization record.

Also, to recap a few things.

Gaspare died after 1930 per the census.
Antonina died after 1942 per the naturalization record
Gaspare was still an Alien in 1930.

Gaspare's father is Francesco.
Gaspare and Atnonina married around 1893 in Italy
Some records can be obtained by microfilm.
Most records should be obtained by writing to Italy

I hope this helps some.

Maria,
church records are good records, but they are all written in a old style (unreadable) and in latin since 1500's until 1950's. So at this point, unless you know latin, it is better to contact the priest, who studied written old style latin, and he can write for you a church certificate....

Everyone!

What a suprise to find more info waiting for me at the end of the day. I can not believe how generous everyone is with their experience and time.

I will be going this Saturday to a Family History Center and I do intend to check out everything that has been suggested.

As it happens, I had 8 years of Latin when I was in school and I believe I will be able to translate the baptismal records.

This is so much fun I can see how someone could become obsessed with not only finding their own ancestors but helping others to find theirs.

Thanks again,
Mary
